So use Blue Jerseys and BDL Barnys?I'm an dunce for not thinking of it before....Blue Jersey Giant. Get's you the size needed to cross with Barny and has yellow legs so you're not fighting the battle of Orp white legs.
I have extremely well partridge laced partridge rocks but cant find good blue rocks anywhereSo you're looking to make blue partridge rocks and have access to a blue rock and partridge rocks but the discussion has brought up using wyandottes, orpingtons, barnevelder and jersey giants?
I don't get it? Why bring in other breeds?
Why not use the rocks? Maybe they're lacking but at least they're the right breed. Are they so lacking that a different breed looks more like a rock then they do?
If that's they case is find a different rock breeder.
Use the blue on the best partridge and just keep breeding the best with blue back to the best partridge.
If partridge are lacking then use a partridge roo over silver penciled hens. That will give yo partridge pullets. Then use the blue over them.
There's ways of getting there without bringing in other breeds IMO.
AgreedI raise Silver Pencilled. They are in need of a lot of work. There's little doubt the Partridge Rock will be used. I think a lot of woes in the fancy varieties need a broad stroke to correct.
That sounds like a plan. I would probably have to really work on improving the blue part in it too cause the only blue rocks I can find are really lame in colorA great blue would be a huge bonus but you have to work with what you have.
All you really need from the blue is the blue color. The lacing doesn't matter. That will come from the partridge.
Breed your future blue rooster to your partridge. Take the best blues and breed back to partridge. That cross will produce some blue partridge.
Then you're off and running. All you do is continue breeding your best blue partridge offspring back to the best partridge. That will be where your stock starts to improve in type.
At some point you can start breeding your blue partridge to blue partridge or you can continue to always breed back to partridge.
It'll only take two generations to get your blue partridges then you have forever to improve them. I think its easier and quicker to stick with just rocks instead of bringing in other breeds and unwanted genes and type.
I don't think so. The blue is gonna be on the partridge pattern so really all you need is the color. The partridge will provide the pattern part. That sounds like a plan. That'll work then cause my partridge rocks are perfectly patterned and come from a line that won GC of show a couple timesI don't think so. The blue is gonna be on the partridge pattern so really all you need is the color. The partridge will provide the pattern part.
If your partridge has good pattern then continuing to breed back to them will give you the pattern and you just take the blue color along for the ride.
I would have zero concern about finding a blue rock with lacing. I agree the blue might need to be worked on in case of very light or very dark color or even uneven color but imo that won't be hard.
The partridge pattern is going to make blue a lot less noticeable about perfection then if you were working on a solid blue bird.
