If you have good type in your birds, you can breed for color, and they will start breeding true. I am just starting to breed, and I don't pay any attention to color when I make my pairing decisions (build the barn before you paint it). Therefore, I am unable to isolate the blue gene, or any other, and breed for it. In most of my birds, the word mottled belongs after any identifiable color pattern. Wheaten mottled, birchen mottled, etc.
