Blue splash marans

You may also want to check out the auctions posted here on BYC.

There are a lot of people selling the dark chocolate eggs!

I, too, enjoy seeing the colorful eggs, and I have EE's already.

So I bid on some Black Copper Marans eggs here on BYC and they are real DARK!

I can't wait to see what they'll lay once they're old enough.

I don't know if you mean ordering the Ameraucanas from the hatchery? you won't get purebred Ameraucanas from a hatchery. The call them that but it is misleading, they are easter eggers.

No if I was to go ahead & order Ameraucanas, it would be thru a breeder. I know I'd only get EE from a hatchery. I am afraid that I'd end up w/ a bunch of roo's if I went ahead & tried to hatch eggs. Then what would I do w/ them all??? I can't have roos in my flock, I'm not zoned for roos in my town. I do have a GLW who is persistently broody & would probably be a great mother to any hatched chicks. My thought was to put the chicks that are ordered under her if she's broody in May & let her raise them. But now, I'm not too sure about keeping my order....maybe Santa will bring me an incubator???

My first chicks were from the local farm store (chicks from hatcheries), since then, I've learned that to get the charecteristics of the breed that I truly am looking for, it's best to get them from a breeder. There are lots of people on here who sell both eggs and day old chicks. I'm not saying that all hatchery birds are no good, but if there is something specific you are looking for (like great egg color)...it's best to buy them from a breeder!! Good luck in your hunt...oh yeah, incubating eggs is quite addicting!!

I hatched chicks sired by this splash marans rooster. One of the hens was blue, so I got a few blue chicks.

The roosters from this hatch made great table birds.

There are 2 types of Marans French and English. The French is the standard adopted in the USA and are to have feathered legs. Non feathered legs are a DQ. Breeding feathered legs to feathered legs can still produce non feathered legs, but the non feathered leg birds should not be used in breeding.

I have three "blue splash" Marans. I had four, but the one with slate legs and black eyes died mysteriously. They were from a hatchery, and I adopted them after their original owners decided to move. They lay very pale, very tan eggs. The girl that died laid the darkest eggs, but they were speckled more than actually dark. The three I have left have white legs and each has a different amount of feathering on their legs. One barely has any, one is just covered. They're not very splashy, just sort-of speckled. I am debating on whether to get them a rooster, or just let my SF rooster have access to them after a few more months of quarantine. I know they are not very purely bred, so I wouldn't feel terrible about mixing them with a Faverolles. Might make some interesting colors...
