Hello -

I have a 2 year old Buff and she is currently molting. However, I can now see a lump under her vent area. It’s soft to the touch, doesn’t seem to bother her if I touch it.
She isn’t comfortable being held currently because of molting so I haven’t been able to get a better feel.

she is eating and drinking like usual. Not laying, but we’re in New England and it’s dark at 430.
I checked for mites, no sign

I fear the worst, but am hoping to hear “maybe it’s her winter bod.”

thank you.

Her lower belly looks red and enlarged, especially due to the missing feathers. A vet might be of help to determine if the bulge is fat, ascites (water belly,) tumor, or from internal laying of masses from salpingitis. Is anyone pecking her feathers there? It looks red and irritated. As long as she is eating and drinking, I would watch her. Check to see that her crop is emptying overnight. Make sure that she doesn’t have any lice or mites under her vent and belly. You could try applying some cream or ointment to the red area to prevent pecking.

Thank you so much! She is the only chicken who lets me hold her, so I am attached to her.

I haven’t noticed pecking, just some pecking order squabbles especially with molting.

we need to find a local vet, so I’ll work on that today!

I’ll put some bag balm on her today and hopefully that helps!
Thank you so much!

Usually a sick chicken appears lethargic, tail position down, and not eating or drinking. If she is molting, it is normal to feel more listless, be a bit standoffish, and not eat as well. Hopefully, she will perk back up once the molt is finished.

Thank you so much! I’ve gone down a Google Hole and just kept thinking the worst. Which is not good for anyone. I really appreciate your insight. Thank you.
