Vickie,
How do you have this door set up? I was thinking about doing something along the same lines with a door but with Juveniles that are of different ages but that are in one big grow out pen together. I want the younger birds to be able to retreat to a safe zone with food and water in there for them but also be able to venture out into the large run with the slightly older birds.

Thanks
Chris
I use an old dog Ex pen panel as my gate. I lock it in place with a snap. The fatties can't get in then, but the young ones squeeze through. I let them live in there for a few days first when I put them out, then crack open the gate. My gate slides horizontally. That's key. You'd be amazed how a big, fat, Orp hen can squeeze under a gate if there is food on the other side !

And now back to our regular program -

HERITAGE LARGE FOWL

Ya I was reading this stuff all doped up with cold pills and wondering does anyone need any rare chickens?

A guy asked if I had any Red Bantam Eggs on my personnel message. Someone would boy I am not going to hunt for these suckers today . Delaware Bantams. Never saw one in my life.

I need two dozen Black Jersey Giant Eggs.

Need about 20 Rose Comb Rhode Island Red large fowl chicks or 4 dozen eggs for two people.

Found 18 Rouen eggs for a junior 4Her.

Sold out on White Plymouth Rocks right now in Chicks.

Many Many are getting RI Rhode Island Red large fowl. Very happy about that.

Many are contacting me this year who want to want to get into the better kind of chickens. That is they want to get rid of the chickens they got at the feed store and convert over to the pretty ones. Don't want to use the H word or S OF P type bird. Gve those words up for LENT. Had Fish yesterday. How about that. Crab patties boy they where good.

I don't really give a D.m what they call them these rookies newbies chicken ma..s I am going to help them and I may hit the lottery on these ladies some day or better yet one day when I am Rhode Island Red Heaven I can say to the old boys there hay I helped that soccer mom get her little boy some Rhode Island Reds back in 2013 and look at him today he is the top breeder in the USA.

That's what it should all be about. We have to weed our way through the Political Correctness and not hurting anyone's feelings. I don't know if I will every attend a base ball game for kids where they don't keep score but there is a movement to not have a loose as they don't want to offend them for loosing.

Well I better get off of this I may get booted off this site for my feelings.

O I was at the gas station at Wall Mart the other day and I asked a mother pouring gas into her car are you a Soccer Mom. She looked at me for a second and said yes. Rush would have been PROUD of me for saying that.

How did you know she said. I said I saw the decal on your back window for Fairhope Soccer League.

Well all of you out there if you are lurking and want some rare breed of big chickens with pretty feathers on them let me know. Send me a personnel message and I will try to help you find them. Heck I have learned how to make chickens like large fowl Delaware's. We have learned allot in the last two and half years and we do get along very well with each other most of the time.

Then only time my Blood pressure goes up is when some one says their have orange and half red chickens are H R I Reds. We had a guy come on here about a year or so ago and I had to start taking Valium to read the thread. He did not know sh.t from Shineolia about chickens.

We should make it for another one to two more years on this thread. We still have a hundred or so more folks to help out.

By then the others on here will be able to help them out and I can retire and play with butterfly's and honey bees or something.

Maybe I will get a stamp collection or something.

Have a nice day. Got to till my garden going to plant in a few days when the Almanac tells me its ok.

Entry forms here have not explained how to enter so I did have to call for help. The curmudgeonly "old-timers" that make up the entry forms here (in Canada) apparently assume that no one new will ever attempt to enter so no explanation is necessary. And even then, several times, including at my first show, I've had cage tags filled out incorrectly even though I had the entry correct that caused me to be disqualified. And I've seen it happen to others. That was particularly disappointing.

Maybe you need to move to the western US. We give instructions on how to enter.

Dog equipment is very useful in the chicken world. I use X pens and snaps for all kinds of temporary things with the birds. The wife doesn't like it much though.

I can't imagine you getting kicked off Bob. You are pretty gentle in your responses. Just to let you know that I have Lacy Greer Rosecmb RIR bantams now. I traded some Runners for them at the ABA National........I guess I need to join the RIR club. Off to a poultry show for the weekend................

Walt

BEST of luck at the show, Walt - not like you really need it, though.

Bob - thanks for your post; I definitely appreciated it. I have a tough time believing you'd be happy chasing butterflies, though.

Bob, let me know if you start collecting butterflies. My 8 year old has been collecting them since he was 4. He has an extensive collection and knows all the correct terminology. He would be glad to share it with you so you don't get in trouble with the people over on BYB.

And Honeybees, I can help you out there :) Things really get hopping on the beekeeping forums!

Oh wow, this post really tickled my funny bone. Wracked my brain trying to figure out what ma...s meant and all I could come up with was 'madames'...as in "chicken ranch." What a hoot! Benadryl affects me that way.

Well, I'm no longer a soccer mom and kids (grown now) aren't interested in chickens unless they're breaded and fried, but there's still hope for grandkids in the not too distant future. So perhaps there's still a chance for posterity (and bragging rights beyond the pearly gates) if I can manage to rustle up some of those gorgeous cherry mahogany RC RIR critters to add to our farm!

Stick with chickens or go for the butterflies. Beekeeping is HEAVY work as I've learned over the last year.

And before I forget...great blogsite. Lots of really nice articles and information on there. It's so nice when folks share accumulated wisdom so newcomers don't have to re-invent the wheel.
