Whole grains will not come close to supplying the necessary protein percentage that you need unless you are supplementing with animal products, or Calf Manna. Whole grains will LOWER any ration to  below 12%, if more than half.. You need to make that up with animal protein, or CM. I'd much rather feed CM than Soy, or cotton seed meal, and I still supplement with some animal fats.

:thumbsup yep I agree, good advise here, all of it.

Jeff
I might be missing something, but the first ingredient on the CM label is soybean meal... Nothing against CM, just confused.

When I used Calf Manna years ago, I don't recall it being soybean based and even if it was, I wasn't aware at that time of the problems with soy. Last time I read a contents list on Calf Manna, it said soybean. Has it changed and is not now soybean based?

Hi Dragonlady. What is the ratio of feed to CM and whole grains? 90%Feed / 5%CM / 5%WG. Would that work?
Thanks,
Karen
Karen,

I just re-wrote my feeding schedule that I post under the lid of my feed bin. I keep it there just in case I get run over by a truck, or something dire, so anyone feeding would know what the birds get. I am feeding 16 big Orps, and 11, 8-10 week juveniles at the moment. I don't micro manage my amounts. For these birds I am mixing:

2 Scoops rolled oats
2 scoops scratch
2 scoops wild bird seed ....contains lots of small grains and BOSS
1 scoop Calf Manna

Mix everything in a bucket, cover with water, and soak for 24 hours. My scoop holds about 1 1/2 cups. I've seen that each big bird will eat about 1/3 scoop, some less, and more in the winter.
The biggies get Flockraiser, and the Juveniles are still on Medicated Starter free choice.

Right now my White Dutch, Crimson, and Ladino clovers are blooming. The Orps are chowing down on those along with rye grass, and winter wheat. Much to my dogs' consternation, my birds do get meat scraps once , or twice, a week too.

I might be missing something, but the first ingredient on the CM label is soybean meal... Nothing against CM, just confused.

Yes it does but it has a whole lot more goodies in it than not so good like straight soy meal it is 48% protein but a chicken will just about wither up/waste away on it as it has the vitamin content of sage grass or wheat straw. I feed the CM (actually a generic version made by Lonestar Feeds Nutri-boost its basically the same ingredients for about two thirds of the Manna Pro label) for its milk product content is my reasoning. All the feed around here is all vegetarian based(soy) so I have to add my own meat protein feed to the mix, it sucks but I can't order a semi-truck load of animal based feeds in at time here, as I couldn't feed it up fast enough for all the efforts+$$$$

I have found a source for a better feed(one feed for all)26% game bird feed it comes in crumble and pellet forms, it does have an animal fat content in it and will be good to use with my ration of hard grains and scratches for the layers but I'm waiting till I'm done with breeding season and collecting all my hatching eggs before I do the big switch on feeds as to not throw a wrench into the cogs and foul up the rest of the season.

I start my hens back up on the CM(Nutri-boost)at molt/late fall thru hatching season/late spring early summer the rest of the year they get the layer/grain mix and am overwhelmed with eggs severely every year till late fall/early winter and I don't push them/no lighting(for production) during this lull it is best to let them recoup/rest and grow in their new plumage naturally.

I'm just a blabbin' along here today good day to all

Just got my partridge rock chicks from dick horstman. Already have gotten my start of silver spangled hamburgs from paul hardy. Now I can stop searching and finally relax.
How many Silver Spangled Hamburg's do you have? Are they adults or chicks?

I don't know if you realize he is on his final lap as a breeder. I hope you and many other carry on this old line that is about 50 years old that he developed. Its one of the great strains left in the USA if we don't plan on preserving it with others it could be gone in no time.
