Yes Mr Blosl we feel it is very important to preserve the old breeds. If we lose them we lose a vital link to food security. Anyway we are actively breeding some ancient breeds, Langshan chickens and Indian Runner ducks.
Where is little Escambia at?

Escambia County Florida or Alabama?

I saw a young boy last night in our little town going to the dollar store with a four month old puppy. This dog had grace and style. My big dog in the car looked at him out the window. I said to him your dad or mom looked like that. It was a pure breed German Shepard. I only hope he does not get hit by a car and I can see him full grown some day to enjoy his type and color.

That is what you see in Poultry. Once you see a Standard Breed Bird that is good in color and type you will appreciate their quality's. They may not lay like a hatchery chicken but at least they are true to breed like the pictures they have in their catalogs and that's what I enjoy looking at or owning.

So true! When we went to the State Fair and looked at their display of chickens that was set up in the livestock barn...those chickens looked like poor photocopies of the birds that we see photos of here on this thread and in places like the Poultry Press.

I'm very excited to find this thread! I'm fairly new at keeping chickens (only a year), and they are all hatcheries stock. I love my girls, but I have a strong desire to acquire and breed heritage. I'm not ready, yet, as I'm still researching...and still live in an urban area. We have some land that we are in the process of getting ready so we can move there in a couple of years (we are building up slowly so we can retire there with few expenses). At that point, I would like to get serious and focus on heritage. My grandparents raised chickens, and I LOVE to talk to my grandmother about her experience with them. Unfortunately, they stopped farming a very long time ago.

I know there is a lot of experience on this thread, and I feel very out of place and a bit intimidated, but I'll continue to lurk to see what I can learn from all of you.

I still have a lot of catching up to do on this thread, but I'll be monitoring this site...so much great information and advice! Thanks!

My buff O's (pullets) are SOP and yet lay just as often as my hatchery buffs did their first year. I think breeders should pay a bit more attention to laying and that problem, at least for the "layer" or "dual purpose" breeds would sort of go away. Or am I just way off?

You are right on Sarah ! SOP birds will OUT LAY hatchery birds over their lifetime. They are better suited to do so, not to just burn out in a year, or so.

standard of perfection is ok with me
