I n the old days old timers would put a cock bird in a pen with a bunch of young ckls to keep them straight They can get like a bunch of wild teen agers after a while.

I only had one chicken that was mean a white rock bantam cock bird. One day he raised up in his pen and hit me with his spure just back of my knuckle area. My hand swelled up and got infected. I got rid of him but his sons where also mean so I got rid all of them. Cant show mean chickens and expect a judge to place them high. Docile is the name of the game with all H chickens.

Except Leghorns which not many on this tread have but that's normal.

I have a broody hen raising some of my chicks and I can tell you that is what I want to do next year. I have a bunch of Silkie females and Buff Brahma females and I want to set and hatch most of my eggs under them. Seem to get a better over all chick than the light bulb method.

Wild teenagers indeed..I had to get rid of a couple of Roosters too..the theme song from the good the bad and the ugly would be in my head when I entered the pen..I felt like, 2 would go in and only 1 might come out ..I would be dressed like a gladiator just to get a couple eggs, garbage can lid for a sheild..I went round for round just trying to care for that rooster...just trying to powder him was such an ordeal..I would come out black and blue , bit and scratched ect...That many years ago I thought thats just what you were supposed to do, just deal with him..sometimes I just didnt feel like dealing with him..and in summer the buggs get bad..I finnally realised I didnt have to go through this...I even thought this type bird is a mans bird..like there are ladies horses and mens horses..little bit more of a challenge...A little protectiveness doesnt bother me but the all out assults and pro wrestling matches just to treat a bird for bugs were too much..I even thought , I made him this way by badgering him to powder him..then I got a different breed..what a world of difference..I still expect to get flogged , but That has never happened..I know how to do the go ahead and make my day thing..but glad it isnt that way anymore..

Oscar Smart was highly respected English poultry-man. One of the early scientific
Mendelian poultry breeders. He apparently died unexpectedly while creating a
breed called the Mendel Fowl. A poultry breed which would have the egg laying
abilities of the Leghorn and the table qualities of the Sussex.

This is one of my peacekeepers. (black Shamo) Note the scar down her head and neck. She was almost killed by a cock bird, so now has some issues with males......lol She will straighten out the cockerels in a jiffy. I also use old males in pens with young males, but you really need to separate the males from the females if it is not working.

I always read about how the sire passes on his temperament to the offspring, but I'm wondering how much of the hen's temperament is passed on?

At least 50% of it I'd bet, LOL but as Dragonlady posted a good broody mama hen as teacher is worth her weight in titanium for sure. I have multiple flocks of wee ones(mukletey duns) running around here and you can tell the one raised by the pet broodies and the ones not so much a pet the babies are so docile and pests mostly most of these are from multiple hens eggs and multiple rooster as most are not even the hatcher broodies genetic offspring. She instills the good stuff in them.

In other words she is a Butch. I bet that surprises some of those young males that get their egos crushed by her LOL
I call that mental castration reminds me of some of the P-whipped men I know of LOL

She affords me a lot of entertainment ......... these young cockerels think they can just have their way with her. You can see the combination of surprise, and then terror in their eyes. It doesn't take her long. She is also 9 lbs, so she is quite imposing. She kicks like a male.

There are bunch of companies out there who are taking this public domain lit and republishing it for $$$. One of these companies is called Nabu Press. Here is a quote from one of their listings. " Publisher: Nabu Press, United States, 2010
Brand New Book * Print on Demand *.This is a reproduction of a book published before 1923. This book may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process. We believe this work is culturally important, and despite the imperfections, have elected to bring it back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works..."
Nough said. There are other companies like HardPress Publishing who take pains to make sure the text is correct and readable, the illustrations correct to the original text as much as possible. Many times we want a hard copy to study so we can take notes, underline , etc. However most all these newly reprinted classics are available on-line to read for free. Should you find yourself needing one, please feel free to ask me. It's what I enjoy. A former lit researcher, I spend hours at night mining the Net for obscure and rare lit. In the US , 1926 is the cut off date for public domain lit. Although in some cases , like the AKC pedigrees, the public domain date comes as far forward as pre 1962.
However, after 1926, I can locate biblio and copies for sale or borrowing.
Best,
Karen
