This is interesting stuff, thanks. The only thing I would caution against is that hens may not ‘clean out’ in two weeks. I know this goes against a common practice of split breeding, but I have read a story about a hen that was separated into a breeding pen with supposedly no chance of a ‘creeping Rooster’ hatching out a cockerel that was obviously sired by a rooster of an unrelated breed that she had not been in contact with for more than three months. Unfortunately I can’t remember the breed of the hen, but I think the Rooster in question was a Brahma. I’m pretty sure I read this somewhere on feathersite dot com. and they have the pictures of the cross cockerel and the parent stock

I had this happen after FIVE weeks. Apparently I have a REALLY fertile Ameraucana rooster (or an extremely acrobatic one?)

Any leads on some good old typed australorps. I got a 52 model standard and you dont see many that look like that that I have seen. Most are the norm pinched high tailed Riggs running around.

Jim Sallee was the one that helped this girl make these Colombian Rocks with a Sherman White Rock Male. They hit the lottery in my view.

In regards to that male the R I Red he said was to small this would have been a great cross with the Don Nelson females in the mid west orr in Penn and it may have been a late hatched chick which can make them a pound lighter but genetically the off spring would be right on the money. Again people think Reds have to be two to three pounds over standard weight he was at least 7 1/2 pounds maybe 8 . That was a killer male in my view with a finish I have not seen in a long time plus a great all American fully furnished tail. O well let that be a lesson to you lurkers out there.

My wife now said coming home she wants Blue Indian Runner Frizzles. I told her I would see what I could do.

She's been snorting some of my plants I grow in the green house for my cat. I did not know cat nit did that to us old chicken guys.

Hi,
I am thinking it would be a good idea to purchase some wire transport/show cages. What height do ya'll use for your large , heavy fowl? These Keipper coops seem to be "the" thing to buy, but I can't find one taller than 27". Is that tall enough for a big roo? I was thinking of making one with hardwarecloth or something but worry he will abrade his tail on it? Is there another company I should be looking at? A while back someone posted a pic of 5-6 wire cages on a table with their cocks in them for observation? Anyone know what brand they were?
Thanks for your help!
Best,
Karen
I as going to suggest a wooden box, but I see Walt beat me to it. Nice smooth wood and dowels... a perfect chicken transport.

That's a nice one but only being 12" tall, it's better for smaller LF or perfect for bantams...if you have big 'ol birds like mine that weigh 10-12lbs each then that would be a bit tight. Suppose they might get neck 'cricks' if traveling a ways.

Cindy, Airline crates are the way to go with the biggies. Nothing to catch feathers on, and you can stack them. No fighting either, as the birds can only see out the front.
