If you are talking about the APA show in Stevenson, I will be there. I may even show some birds.

Walt

Well this next show here is in Monroe, WA, then the next would be Stevenson.
If you think I would be wasting my time & $ then I will pass and just waite to see how he grows.

If he will not stand horizontal don't enter him. You have other birds.

Walt

I just want to add, I'll be very excited to meet you if you come to the Stevenson show, Walt.

Long and wide. The Rock should be the same width from shoulders to the end of the tail. You need stiff tail feathers, the wider the better to hold up the sickle feathers. Notice how many male Rocks fail in the tail area.

I looked in my pictures for a Rhode Island White Standard Picture but I could not find it. I did find this picture which may have come from Europe.

here is Mohawk V a great typed male from the 1920s.

this is his brother cant find his pictiture right now he was about six months old when I took this picture three years ago

Not the brick shape in the R I Reds . Note the levelness of their top lines and the placement of thier legs dead center.

If I was going to breed RI Whites I would cross them on my old line of White Rock Large Fowl. I had a male three years ago that as a cockerel had a top line flat and like a Red
He has the most fully furnished tail I ever had on a Rock. I gave him to a fellow in Penn to breed onto his Columbian Rock Females. The project was a bust all the chicks turned out barred.

I lost all my males to a fox and so I had my friend ship him back to me and we mated him to five old hens of mine and his mother who was about seven years old. We got some great typed birds and a few flat back ones.

It would not take long maybe three to five years to cross a few flat back females onto this big male of yours. Select chicks whose legs are dead center and they walk around the yard level. He has a great head and that should be the trait you want to stamp onto
your line. I will try to see if we get any flat back females this year that are young. We have about 75 chicks all ready hatched if we do I will give you two and put them in a box I have and ship them to you befor it gets to hot down here.

Cross these two white rock females onto this R I White male of yours pictured or his best son next year.
They also have tight feathers on them like I had three years ago.

I got some DVDs of my old VCR tapes yesterday in the mail. I use to send Christmas tapes to friends of my birds back ten to fiveteen years ago. I could not get over the type of some of the reds and rock large fowl in this tape. When the red males walked around while I was filming them they stayed level and their legs where did center and plum.

Please show your birds dont worry what people say then compair them to the R I Reds that are their to look at thier size and type and compair to your whites.

Think of this. If you built a house and your neigbor built the same house and yours was a little off and cock eyed you could then compair yours to his then tear yours down and rebuild it just like his.

Another test that might be good is to get some good typed R I Reds rasie them side by side with your whites. Then in your minds eye look at the reds then look at the whites and tell your self this is what I am going to do
to change my whites. In three to five years you will reach your goal. Its a numbers game and it can be done if you have faith in what your are doing.

If I find the picture of this white rock male or his brother I will post it on this message. Also take your whites to stevenson show so Walt can show you the good points and the ones you got to work on.
No better lession than to have a great judge with a good eye tell you what you got to do to improve your strain. bob

Robert should I go ahead and get the order from Anthony then ?
I think that may be the way to go...albeit another coop to build, but I guess that would be the way to go.

I would show him at the show that is going to be closest to home to get the opinion of a judge. As far as the dollars spent it costs money to have fun and to go to school. It would be good peace of mind. If however he stands upright all the time like in the photo I would not show him like Walt said. It is possible that the Sand Hill birds were crossed by a previous owner.

Here is a link to a page on BYC about RI Whites from 2009.

Here is what it says in Sand Hill's catalog
"Rose Comb Rhode Island White (AMB): Admitted to the APA Standard in 1922. Ours are rose comb, true to type as indicated in the APA Standard."
http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/catalog/chickens.html
They are generally up front in the catalog about type etc if it is a breed thay are working on with any real type problems.

Here is the ALBC page

The pic on this page is what you will get from Urch as are the pics below none of these are his birds that I know of but easily could be.

Good luck with the birds

Thanks Charlie and everyone.
I just may show him as is, and also ordering the Blosl White rocks.
Oh boy is my plate full~~~
Do any of you remember the posts of Scraps birds or Monkeying aroundfarm ?
There was alot of photos there, these are MOT's grandparents and swears no one introduced any new bloodlines.

and
the next page, Thanks Punky you are on the ball!!
Yes and somewhere is pages of Monkeyingaroundfarm's birds also.
This is how MOT will level out.
Now look at these RIW mature big Cocks and see how they measure up to the SOP, Please Walt ?
The front of these mature Cocks appear to still be in that upright stance, but yet it looks as if the bird has filled out and grown a tail..so is now 'leveled'
Tell what ya think, I have ordered White Rock, but keep hearing Ralph Sturgeon in my mind..."start with what you have...."
Under any circumstances , worse comes to worse
lol.png
I will have a bunch of Blosl's awesome white rocks here !!
Hate to ruin a perfect bird after a maybe bird though...
I will have to save a coop for the WRs and have them be pure.
