Does anyone know anything about the genetics behind an inverted spike? Is it something that the birds carry as a recessive gene, etc. ?

Please give the breeder a call and discuss your issues with him!

I encourage anyone who has a problem with stock purchased to contact the seller to resolve.

I agree. He will not know there is a problem unless he is informed that there is a problem.

Folks - I'd like to remind you ALL (especially you who regularly particpate on this thread, who have been long-time members here) to hit the report button when you see a post that is troubling to you or seems to be troubling to others. QUOTING the offending post is NOT helpful.

Another reminder - disputes must be handled privately. It's alright to speak of an issue with your birds, in the vein of working to breed it out, it's most definitely NOT OKAY to flame the person you got the hatching eggs or birds from.

It may not be a strictly genetic problem. Environmental factors may be contributing factors. Even during embryonic developement when inverted spike forming, the egg can vary as a function of nutrient status of mother egg being developed. I think at least some environmental component because the inverted comb does not breed true.

I guess I will throw in some pictures from the same breeder. Out of the 27 birds I got from him I will be down to a cockerel and two pullets for next year. They show great type and from what I understand his bloodlines to be I am proud to have these birds in my yard. It would be great if the oldest heritage breed was available in good type at hatcheries all over the US. We all know good stock is very hard to find, and this breeder provides a good bird that has lots of potential. I bought eggs from a small farm down in NC, most of the birds are junk but there is a pullet that came out of that flock that catches my eye every time she walks by. Keep looking
