My goals are similar to yours. In my experience, the Delawares matured faster than the Buckeyes. I like the Delaware as a meat bird because you can butcher them young enough to be able to use them as fryers and grill them on the BBQ. They taste great and lay nice big brown eggs, too.

The Buckeyes take longer to mature to a size for eating, so are good as a roasting bird. Mine don't lay as well as my other breeds but I have hatchery stock. If you buy Buckeyes, buy from a breeder in the Buckeye Club. Actually, I recommend not to buy from a hatchery for any of my breeds.

I also raise Silver Gray Dorkings, which are another good roasting bird. Mine are good layers, but not as good as the Delawares. The Dorkings mature slowly also but can be butchered young if you don't mind less meat. A full grown Dorking has exceptional white meat when roasted. Buckeyes have superior dark meat IMO when roasted.

Thanks for the information. I think I will do Delewares in my second coop (boy my husband is going to be mad at me lol). I have never heard of Dorkings are they easy to find?

It's very hard to find Dorkings of good type. McMurrays has a line that may be from Duane Urch. You can also check on BYC for breeders.

If you want good typey Dorkings you need to contact Craig Russell or Ed Hart.

You can contact Ed Hart by email, he is good about getting back to you. He has White and Colored Dorkings, I have some whites I hatched this year and they are very nice.
His email is [email protected]

Ed's dorkings original came from Craig. You are more than likely to get stock from Ed than from Craig.... unless you live in PA and can drive to Craig's farm.

I
started this tread many pages ago sure has grown.

So many people have asked me in the past 12 moths for standard breed fowl. Not many got what they wanted but a few did. Reason no stock or chicks or eggs available. There are some excellent R I Red breeders who where able to help people and I hope you will take pictures of your birds for us to see this fall.
Next I hope you will be able to share some of your young birds with beginners next year such as shipping ten four week old started chicks shiped overnight mail. Hathcing eggs have been still inconsistent this year. Most people got about15% on Standard Breed chickens and production chickens about 45% much higher with these kind of chickens higher vitality I think.

The barred plymouth rocks have done very well this year. Kathy I saw some nice colored barring in your young chicks and I hope the big male you liked is out of the male that Jermie had that drove me nuts last year or out of that linkage of parents.

For me I took the year off from chickens. I hatched some nice birds but I am now rebuilding all my pens and will rebuild new brooder boxes overhaul my incubaotor and next year I am going to focus on doing it right with less mistakes.

I wonder how many people got good stock of the standard type large fowl. Many of you have birds I would love to see pictures of.

Keep up the good work with this tread. I stoped using the Heritage word and now use the term Standard Breed Large Fowl. There is a difference as many who say they have Heritage really dont. If you have Standard Breed Large Fowl you have what I was trying to start many pages ago. Talked to a new friend who lives next to me he got Standard Buff Orpingtons, New Hampshires from Ackers in Indiana, Black Austrolorpes from a good strain, Barrred Rocks from Jerimie in Nebraska and two put the iceing on the cake he is geting two males and two old hens from Brian of Rhode Island Reds in two weeks my old Mohawk strain. So it will be fun to go and visit this fellows young birds. He did his home work and got good strains and standard breed birds
