This is the follow up information from the poster regarding light effecting growth... if anyone else but me was curious.

It could be true......in that location with those birds. "It causes the pituitary glands to kickstart the breeding cycles" is true. like you I would like to see concrete data supporting this statement that would be true if done with any chicken in any location with the exact same lighting. I am not sayiing the statements are true or false, I am saying that one persons observations may be different than others.....happens all the time with chickens.

ashandvine, you could just use my name. I am happy to share my experiences and would be happy to show comparisons.

Oklahoma winters are hard on any bird. But on a bird that is still growing, it can be even more deadly.

Me too. Then they called home and you got worse when you got home that night.


Might be why a lot of us like the kids of chickens we do.

Kind of you to say. Got them from KathyinMo who got them from Jeremy, who got them from Frank Reese, I believe.

Got a young man I've mentored for years. Three years ago, I had him stay with us for a month and he helped me completely rebuild our chicken barn. Taught him carpentry, laying out walls, cutting rafters, shingling, hanging siding, etc. He took to our chickens so I set him up with his first flock. He's not blinked and has done really, really well. Tomorrow, I'm going to be giving him a trio of those Barred Rocks. He's only a fourth my age, so he'll be doing things with his birds for decades after I'm gone. That he is a respectful, hard working, clean living, God fearing young man? Priceless.
