What is the Modern Langshan?

Walt
I believe that there like the "European" Langshan.
To me the European Langshan look more like a Modern Game /Orpington cross than a Langshan.

Those actually appear to be German Langshans. I believe those are also mostly seen in bantam in the UK. The "modern" Langshan from what I understand still has the same wine glass shape but legs that are a bit longer and more forward on the body. The legs should be clean-legged. I will try to find the information. It was written by thorleif on the Langshan Thread.

It is also entirely possible that I have misinterpreted. But, I cannot seem to find German bantams and have somehow gotten pure Lamgshans with clean legs and longer legs. Why not utilize them? Will take quite some time, but having them pure is already a plus for me.

Plus, how amazing would these birds look as largefowl?!

Just stoping in. Always great conversations on this thread. Still working on raising some Crevecoeurs I have a couple batches and one being raised by a broody. They are hardy little buggers. They fly pretty well. Think I have some time before I will be able to tell what I have.

That is an interesting looking bird, but there are not a lot of good Langshans here, so it might be best to improve those first. This is a general comment Chris and not directed to you. For some reason I have a hard time getting into new breeds when the old need so much work.

Walt I agree with you the purpose of this thread is to promote old Heritage Breeds that are going to the way side. How many folks in the USA are breeding Langshan's since our good breeder Forest had to slow down in Oklahoma and now is gone.

The German folks sure do like legs on their chickens. The Reds are the same way. However the New Hampshire's seem to be like us in the USA.

Promoting Europe non breeds to fill the need for the original breeds such as Orps and Langshangs bothers me.

Who knows the next thing the younger generation of breeders will want to add more leg to our large fowl breeds will they over power our present old STANDARDS?

I hope not. Leave them as they are and try to save what breeds we can.

Nice pictures but makes my stomach do funny things.

I'm unsure as to what you mean as to who is breeding goods birds in the USA? There are many Langshans that will take Champion at a show? In the South, the Langshan is the predominant winner and judging by the Poultry Press, others in the northern part of the US are placing very well at shows.

Maybe it is just because I have looked far and wide, but I know of at least 10 good breeders, and no, I am not including myself in this number as I do not believe I have the experience that the others have who have been showing the breed for 40+ years.

I believe the true Modern Langshans was in the US at one point, and has since died out. These are all fairly old breeds that are still very rare. The German Langshan, as far as I have seen are the ones that have been available in Europe for some time, but are still quite rare.

Maybe it is that most of the Langshan breeders are simply not "on the web" and are not well-known or talked about often online?

My own personal flock will continue with Forrest's breeding patterns. I loved the look of his birds and will continue to his "map" of the breed, but why not have some fun and try to bring back an already extinct variety of this breed? I doubt he would be very impressed with the birds at the moment, but nobody was very impressed with his barred rosecombed Minorcas either. Unfortunately, someone purchased those and let that line die.

I do appreciate this thread and would like to take a step back and refrain from discussing breeds that are not in the APA Standard. Thank you for allowing me to interject into the thread.
