I spent the day cleaning and replacing the shavings in my Rooster condos so while I had the guys out of their pens, I took a couple pics of some of the boys I'm growing out. Any thought or comments on these guys,,,,,

This is one of six male RIR's that I kept and I'm growing out.... He is about 7 months old right now and my favorite Red....

This is one of 4 BR males that I'm growing out... He is about 6 months old now and I'm still hoping for a tale on this guy but if not I have another that is looking real good...

This guy is a little older than the other to guys...he is right at 11 months old, He is half American and half German, NH and I could not get him to relax any.,,,

This is a group shot of some Reds and some NH's

Thanks for looking and let me know what you think....
Chris

They are nice. really like the RIR. VIVI

Can anyone recommend a heritage breed that has great meat qualities and can tolerate (TX) heat very well?

Naked necks (pure or mixed) seem to be the best suited for what I'm looking for, but maybe you knowledgable people know of some other breeds that would fit the bill?

Cubalayas seem like a possible fit, but I am unclear on what is and is not a heritage breed.

Hey Rodriguez, I'm not sure exactly what part we'll ultimately be buying land in, but the winter low where we are moving to is 40 degrees, and snow sounds like it is very rare in that part of TX (central).

I will not get into what a heritage breed is or is not. I am fascinated by cubalayas though. If I could keep more birds, Cubalayas would be on the list. Another would be the Catalana. Both could use a few more people keeping them. Both should tolerate the heat relatively well.

I see! I'm originally from Oklahoma, and in the winter it can get to -35*. (I would prefer to NEVER feel that again...) and the summers up to 120*. Quite a flux. I know parts of Texas can be the same way, mainly the panhandle.

What color eggs are you looking for?

My personal favorites, as long as it doesn't get too cold would be Minorcas for white eggs (If you can find good Rosecombs, that would save you should there be a really cold snap as the large combs can get frostbitten on the single-combed birds).

And for brown eggs, of course, the majestic Langshan! ;)

Not only can they withstand the ridiculous heat that the midwest/south has, they can also handle the lovely negative temps that Oklahoma likes to throw. They are fairly calm, large, stately birds. My line often goes broody. Usually a few weeks before a show...and can lay anywhere from a light cream colored egg to a very dark brown egg. They are very slow growers and given time, will produce a nice carcass. None of my males have ever attacked...probably because they get 2 shots. One is a learning curve the second and they're done.

My Langshans are still producing an overabundance of eggs...might even have to give a few away to the neighbors or sell some at the market. Who knows! Maybe even freeze them!

Wow, thanks for all the help guys! No preference on egg color. I'm more concerned about meat quality. The Langshans sure do sound nice. I don't know much about them, and will have to look into them. They sure are good looking birds. The Catalanas are quite handsome as well, and I think I've heard them mentioned before in the meat dept. good to know the cubalayas are heritage...the breed fascinates me!

And brrr, I'm looking to escape the cold a bit. I can see why you'd be happy to escape such extremes!

Chris Herzog,
Do you mind sharing any pictures or the dimensions of your "Rooster condos", thanks?
