I don't think you or anyone else can "tick off" the bunch here...they are WAY TOO THICK SKINNED and have too many years of experience for that

My interpretation of Bob's intent (and this in MY opinion only) is that the thread was started to discuss the breeds and way(s) in which to preserve them as they were admitted into the APA standard, some of which date back to the 1800s

In my personal situation, I raise Columbian Plymouth Rocks in LF which Bob helped me to obtain approximately 3 yrs ago.. There were NONE to speak of in the US and I am simply working to re-establish a working flock. They are not show worthy yet, but I am trying to utilize the expertise of this combined group to get them to a point that they "could" be shown (per APA standards) if I wanted to.

I hope that makes sense and I hope others will provide their opinions as well
There are a lot of Orp breeders who wish we could go back to the original Orp standard ! It was changed from the original British standard after WW1 in 1929 . A dramatic difference in tail set , much more Rock like. Probably because Rock blood was used during the war years to keep Orps going in the US. Rock blood is still being used, and the result is a flat topped bird with a tendency to ewe neck , particularly in the males.

Yeah, you're right. I'm just a bit neurotic about chicken eyes because one of my hens has a fleshy red bump on her eye. It's a tumor, I'm sure.

anyone know how I can contact this lady.? Notice the barred rock on the cover of her book
where do you think this bird came from???????

I will message you her contact information.....

Janet Vorwald Dohner is a librarian and researcher who has raised horses, goats, livestock dogs, and chickens, including the very rare Dominique and Delaware breeds, on her farm in Michigan.

She has written articles for Mother Earth News, and others.

Wow, there's a ton of information on her if you Google her name - she's even raised LGDs for 26 years - that's the "full circle" of owning livestock. I bet she's a neat lady!

I thought the bird that I posted light years ago was a NH Red. He came as part of a BYC egg swap and when I met him I thought he was very handsome. I gave him to my neighbor to keep because right now there are too many cockerels here. And he asked me for one. His wife was intimidated by his size lol I had hoped to know a bit more about his type but will have to go sneak some more pics from the neighbor's side of the road. to be continued...
Sitting here watching my 11 year old son and 7 year old daughter watch Walt aka fowlman01 among others on video. So glad they are interested in poultry and livestock!

How do I get a copy of this? I tried the link but it failed.

Yes, it's true.

Very clear on the chicken bible so I can only imagine...

. I thought my barred Rocks were gorgeous when I first started, but once I saw some of these ringlet type BR's with the precise markings, there was no way I was going back. They are much bigger birds too.
The pics Bob posted of those BR earlier really are something to see. I need to stop looking. I'll end up a chicken collector! Dominiques would be the one for me if I went zipper. As it is I have to focus on the ones I have. Stop showing these beautiful birds.

Scott has anyone told you or asked to help you on how to improve your Colombian Plymouth Rocks other than what you have been doing.?

I got the code on my Rhode Island Reds but dont know what to do with it. Maybe you will be more lucky. They should have fun on the new thread and maybe they can reach perfection faster than us the old fashion way, There should be a contest one does it the old fashion way line breeding and the other group does it by genetic. Then see who gets there faster.

I would do it Gen tic wise but other that the formula for the Reds that is all I have. No instrutions on how to breed them. I dont know if its for color or type.

I think I will cross Mr. Silikie onto some of my Red bantam females for Genetic Diversity. But then I dont know what I am talking about in Genetic Diversity anyway.

I dont know what to do.

Think I would be money ahead getting me some Seromeas.

With almost 20 chickens in possession and having raised them since March of this year in my back yard, I believe I have reached "expert" status on BYC, Robert, so I would be happy to provide you any sort of advice you need.

I believe if you took the progeny from Mr. Silkie and your Red banties and cross them in with some of Lacy Blue's Andalusians, you have the makings of a patriotic colored Red, White, and Blue hen. If you start now and work fast, you just might have chicks in time for the Fourth of July.

If you like, I can draw you out a genetic chart with Punnett squares and everything so you can even back it up with science!

All the best.

Someone posted a while back and I have lost the link.
Where can I get a current copy of the SOP?

I have the standard for the breeds I have, but want to learn more form the instructional section of the book....

I will preface this with....This is true....there are pink Silkies and I have seen photo's of them. They are not dyed and not too even, but look sorta pink. Something for Bob to strive for.

You need to get rid of the winner sign under your name and get one that says "Educator" and then you can really argue with all the other experts here. Your quals are much better than some of the experts here. 10 months puts you in that area of expertise and you have a lot more chickens than most........go for it!
