Hi,
Know we are looking to reserve the knowledge of the old breeders. Just a thought, has anyone contacted the families of deceased breeders to see if they kept their lit?
Years ago, I contacted the family of a deceased dog breeder whose methods I really admired. I was hoping she had left some her numerous self-published lit with the family. Reached the family the day before the archive was being taken to the dump. Made a mad midnight dash across 2 States and rescued a 60 document file box archive. The genetic history of the kennel.
Point was, many families are proud of their ancestors achievements and are more than willing to pass on the lit, records, etc. If they just knew where to send them and/or found someone they knew would respect them.
I am 61 now and only have been in poultry only a few years. Will never be anything but a beginner in the eyes of the veteran breeders. I read a lot of these old magazines and see ads for top winning poultry of these Heritage breeds we discuss. And I wonder... if the family has a treasure trove they are keeping and would be willing to part with if they just knew who wanted it and would respect it.
Food for thought,
Karen

Thank you Karen for thinking of this !!!!!!!! Bears repeating.

I have a Delaware in the slow cooker right now. If you'd like me to take a picture of it when I get it on a plate... let me know.

Of course mine are just hatchery birds... and this was one of the smaller ones. I'm working my way up!

I usually roast TWO hatchery birds at a time. The ameracana carcasses are a little better. I'm still looking for more meat:bone ratio. ( Without loosing a strong healthy frame.)

Cooked up a faverolles cockerel and the meat to bone ratio was good. Meat was soooooo flavorful. I will have to post pictures soon.

Not sure how to get around this . . . . I do love the texture and flavor of the birds that take a little longer to ge to the roasting pan. I"ve her the favs have a wonderful flavor different than other birds. . . .

Reminds me...

I picked up one of my Andalusian cock birds yesterday. Checking everybody for mites, etc., anyway, when I got him out of his pen and was able to stand back up I promptly told him that he was as big as a Christmas Turkey! I wouldn't eat him though (not yet) He's my biggest boy and is he ever an armload! I need to get some scales (still) so I can weigh my birds! I had picked up his daddy, just before, and I can tell you there was a HUGE difference!

Maybe you could say "Yes, would you like to see the receipt?" If they answer yes, show it to them. Once they start answering "no", time to take out the home grown birds.
