I was fortunate enough to get RIR eggs shipped to me. It was my first time going the shipped eggs route and I am so glad I took the plunge. While I did not have a great hatch, (no fault of the shipper), I did end up with 5 beautiful birds to get me started. I hatch guinea eggs and had limited experience with chicken eggs so I really was a novice at hatching chickens. I will not think twice about doing it again. I love the entire experience of hatching out eggs and raising them up, especially on a breed that I really wanted to get started on. So while I may only have 5 chicks, it is enough to get me started and I am most appreciative to have been given the opportunity.

Kathy and Chris, you need not feel threatened by Brinsea. Their incubators cost double as much as the Hovabator when they come with the humidity pump or even more - and the Hovabators hold far more eggs. It's all about supply and demand. Some folks will always be content to simply set more eggs but Brinsea offers some of us the option of paying for a better hatch rate - at this point.

I'm still not convinced Hovabator won't come up with their own version of the humidity pump in the not too distant future.

Fred...you had talked about doing an online chicken show or classes showing good and bad points on various breeds. You still up for that?

Walt

Oh yeah. I'd like to open a new thread, get you, Bob, and the Whole Gang. I'd like to set some rules. A week per breed, then move on to another, that kind of thing. Lots of photos, because those really attract attention, I think. Since most of the breeds have varieties and several well known strains, we could do a good job on each strain too.

We'll need some folks from here to commit to helping from time to time. Anytime you all are ready. Tis the season, what with folks making their breed/buying decisions soon, as spring will be upon us.

I'm not, "threatened" by Brinsea why would you think or say that?
I get around a 90% hatch out of my Old Hova-bator so that is right around 37 eggs per setting that I hatch.
Now I get $ 6.00 each out of my Reds, I payed for that Hova-bator with my first setting plus had money in my pocket.

We have a few judges that come to this thread. If it is based on the APA SOP I'm in.

w.

That's what I was thinking. There are enough judges here to pull this off. Of course, of course, a thousand times, of course photos aren't the same as handling a bird, but the educational value of this, showing folks what a good bird is? Priceless. Also, why? Why is this bird good, why does this bird need work and why does that bird fail to come close enough. That kind of thing. But...... also educating on what a Rock is, for example. Why is supposed to have this tail, this back, this breast, this leg set, etc. Then, what is a Buckeye? What is supposed to look like and why?

Do you think there'd be any interest in such a thread, trying desperately to keep it educational and not competitive? Truthful, but at the same time mentoring in nature?

As a beginner I know I would have great interest in a thread like that. I read everything I can on these threads and of course all the pics help, but to actually have things pointed out would be extremely helpful to us novices.

I think it would be a GREAT thread if kept as an educational thread and respectful. Not a bashing kind of thread. That would turn off new people who might want to get into a new breed or upgrade to a better quality of bird. People need to know and understand what that weeks featured breed is about to appreciate it.
