over a chicken!?!? Sheesh. It's not like we're talking buckets of prize money - or even thimbles! I'm truly shocked.

(I organized horse shows for many years so I am aware of the sense of entitlement some folks arrive with and the grief they are prepared to dish out if it doesn't go their way but I still shake my head. I also had to try to keep the judges happy ....

I thought the same thing..thimble is an understatement...its a chicken..a food product..other than ornamentals , bantams that are supposed to be little and pretty , the objective was meat....eggs...some of the most bizzar ,strange people I have ever met go to those chicken shows..some have the god complex assume they are way over the top special and tell themselves that dailey ..some get real mad if they dont win..also some of the most wonderful people I have ever met there as well...the guys doing all the winning are usually quiet and gracious they know what they have when they go there...those people are just fantastic..helpful, nice want the best for the breeds...they know they sit in good position...

I guess its that way in most everything..horse people , dog show people, you hear it all the time..But never expected it to be in chicken world too..it was a shocker to me that people would try to drive other people out in strange ways which doesnt do the breeds any justice , probably why a lot of them are on critical list ..one guy will get a breed, hog them all up and you aint gettin any next thing you know they are trying to save them from extinction..I always think goody gumdrops, you keep your chickens all to yourself..when they go extinct or you turn them into something they wernt befor dont come crying

Mr Walt, are there any kinds of shows for chickens or fowl that are not about judging to a standard? I am thinking of that weird 'ugliest dog' contest or agility and obedience contests that any person's dog may enter. I wonder if that isn't part of the reason people take their sweet Henny Penny to the shows and then get personally offended, as if you were insulting their daughters or son. Maybe if there were some other show for them to take snookums to they would be less inclined to violence. For your sake, I hope so.
The Sussex folk in England have a lot of fun with this. They ahve egg shows. But more than just the standard "judge the egg against the Standard". they have catagories for ugliest egg, best dressed egg, etc. Get all kinds of entries and have a lot of fun doing it!

Let me redirect a few stones away from you by saying if you are serious about meat then ducks and rabbits, not chickens, are the way to go, and heritage rabbits and ducks eat less and grow fast; as well they are hardy.

I could be wrong, but not too far off.............. I believe Runner ducks hold the record for most eggs produced. They are thin and efficient and you could even eat them. They are crazy as heck, but they lay lots of eggs....and rabbits reproduce like rabbits, so there you go........

There are sometimes non standard classes at fairs, but these people want their RIR or whatever they think it is, in the conformation classes. Some of it is just not finding out a little before entering. The breed I have to DQ the most for not being SOP is the Ameraucana's. Everyone has an Ameraucana and the hatcheries sell the daylights out of them. The problem is that they are these goofy colors that no Standard anywhere recognizes and the leg color is always wrong.

I wish we would do that here..have egg shows..I know lot of people in england raise birds for nothing more than exhibiting eggs they are not much to look at standard wise but make the best quality eggs..we need more judges here..I got reserve champion at a fair show for brown eggs..they dont go all out like england thou..

I would, but ducks are just NASTY to raise. And rabbits, I know my limits. I can go hunting for rabbits, but I'll be darned if I can just bop one on the head. A chicken? Absolutely. A goose? Sure. But a rabbit is one of those I can't do.

I'm not weak...I'm realistic! :D

The Marans Club has egg shows at the shows here in CA....all the shows. I think they APA should do it again. At Indy last year I got some info on how to do it from a British egg judge.

Walt,
Could you PM me that info? I am wanting to set up egg shows for the Sussex fancy here in the US. I also need a Standard for Sussex eggs , if you have one.
Thanks,
Karen
