Hey Chris,
There is nothing on the barrel. It is mounted on the side of the pen so they can go in it in bad weather. They never do maybe if it sleets. The barrels came from a cocker friend. They were set up with tie cords attached.I took the cords off.

Ah, I see that now.
When I first looked at the pictures it looked like you had a row of barrels in between 2 rows of round pens.

My birds only use there barrels in real bad weather, they would rather roost on the barrel than in them on a nice night.

The Reds look good and I really like your Horstman Reds, they should look great when they get older.

Do ya'll not have a predator problem using these types of pens? If not what's your secret? As I'm just getting started in LF RIR with limited building abilities, I am thinking even an old lady could build those, which means I can have more birds then I thought I could have. Thanks.

Hi Melroseladi,
I have been very fortunate as far as predators.I really should have the chicken yard fensed in with electric wire.I have a flimsy garden fense just to keep the cock I have running loose from fense fighting.

If you can't find a show stick (should be able to pick one up in an office supply store...we called them "pointers" in school), you might could use a dowel rod in a pinch.

As soon as I can get back to my home in the south, I will really start conditioning these birds. Finally reached the point where I have some good back up breeding birds if something should happen. And I'm hoping to heck I won't ever have to deal with this stupid Fowl Pox to these extremes ever again!
Pox was rampant here in S.C. this year . I think the fans kept the Mosquitos off my Orps, so we lucked out. Nasty stuff to deal with.

Thanks Bobby. You sure gave me some ideas. I live in the middle of the woods with predators galore. I have mostly chainlink pens right now but a opossum managed to get into one and wipe out my guinea juveniles. I set a trap and opossum won't be doing that again. Our biggest issue right now are fox. We are overrun with them but so far they have only taken my free-rangers during the daytime, not messing with the pens at night. We have a new neighbor who is a trapper so hopefully that problem will get resolved this coming year.

Hi Penny, Now and then I will have a predator problem but there far and few between.
There are 5 thing I have that keep my bird "safe".

(1) Good Fence (around the yard where the birds are at)
(2) Good Yard Dog (one that stays in the yard all the time and at the very least likes to bark when something or someone is around)
(3) Good Lighting
(4) Good Gun
(5) Good Traps (live trap or leg-hold work fine)
