A question for the judges/experts - could/would/should that "bump" I've circled be considered a sprig? (IMO. It looks worse/more prominent in real life ....

Barb, I am not a judge or expert either, But the comb is ok and not a sprig.

Of course it's a sprig, you moron! You should get rid of him immediately. I am willing to help.

Monnie662 - Thank you so much for that recall info! My son has eggs incubating (at my inlaws) in that Brower model right now.
You are very welcome. I am on an email list for Recalls and it covers a lot of things especially dog food which is how I got started on it. Hope my posting will help watching to see if there are any problems, have emailed family and friends about cars they own and they did not know the vehicles were recalled.

It is not a sprig, it is an "uneven serration" of the comb. I have seen far worse. If he is your best in other regards, I would use him and then really watch his offspring. The girls you put him with should have no bird in their history that had these uneven serrations. Hopefully they're not too closely related.

Though this is most definitely true, for where we are at this point with Marans, he's about perfect, frankly, except that he has 6 spikes instead of the 5 he should have. At this stage of the game in breeding Marans, I would most definitely not even consider it as a cull point, Barb. That'll come much further down the line.

If you have any girls that have fewer than the standard number of comb points, use them with him. That will bring down the number of points in some of the offspring.
Too much is put into the number of points a chicken should have. It sure is not a deal breaker when showing. The uneven serration is not something to be worrying about. If anyone is worried about the number of points just keep the 4-6 grouping and forget about how many they have as for showing. This is something that most judge will not worry about.

Very true. I've seen some birds on champion row that made me
