Here's a link to the Fancy Fowl UK website for their magazine. It ill download the covers, give it a second, but you can see the strong mottling on the Ancona, although is type is rather British. There's an interesting RIR on the neighboring cover.

In generaly they seem to be very strong color breeders, although that Wyandotte cock isn't anything to turn one's nose up at, but check out the color on the Lakenvelder.

That's a good variety of Mediterranean birds! I wish we had more here in the Midwest! Whose birds are the Ancona and Spanish?

Jan 26,27 is the ABA National sponsored by my home club ..Pacific Poultry Breeders Assn. We have over 3800 entries so far and the large fowl will be about 800 birds.
Contrary to popular belief online......Cali has some awesome birds.

I don't know how the Catalana's were made, but they are pretty impressive in person!

I myself always use wood floors in my brooder box and have did it this way for over 50 year and do not plan on changing now. I simply stated if you already have wire floors you can use the news paper dampened as it will speed up the process greatly. I want my chicks to get a taste of the crap on the floor to help with developing an initial immunity. If you take chicks out of a brooder with wire floor and put them on the ground you will most likely end up with the disease.

Just trying to help some that are new to the fowl. There is no helping the people that have been around a few year. I should of stated that the post was more directed to the newer people.

Looking at your photos. What a lovely set-up. Love the barrel idea. Who do yu put in them and for what purpose? this might be one way for me to stretch the space I have if the purpose fits. Thanks so much for sharing! For me, the trick is to do it without overcrowding the ground.Howdo you handle birds in the barrels in wintertime? or don't you use them then?

The term 'Cocci' is very commonly used in poultry circles, even commercial poultry circles and even by poultry veterinarians that work for the pharmaceutical companies that sell 'Cocci' feed additive treatments. So I think we are getting a little hang up on terminology here. I apologize if my reference to Coccidiosis as simply 'cocci' was misunderstood. It is generally considered to be one in the same by poultry professionals and scientists that work in the area. I will try to be more specific and exact next time.

We have the same problem in dog circles. Two skin problems with the same anagram , DM. One is Demotectic Mange ( caused by a mite) . the other is Dermatomyositis ( an immune disorder which effects the skin). Really unfortunate for the newcomers to dogs because they end up misunderstanding conversations.

Karen, I built the Barrel wall about 10 year ago to house Brahma Bantam Males and the winter does not hinder their use at all. I wish I had of used only two barrell high and raised the bottom up to a starting point of 36". I have a good woodworking Vacuum that I use to clean them out and put the shavings back in with also. These can be used for any of the Large fowl except the larger males in some breeds. I have kept the Marans in these without a problem. The Buff Brahma bantams done better in these than if they were inside in winter. I have RIR bantams and White rock bantams and they do good in the barrells. The RIR bantams are taken out during winter months as their combs will freeze. These are setup facing the north so no water gets into them here in Michigan.

LB-- where do you apply the "tiny spray"? Can it be put directly on the skin --couple drops?

Generally, I spray below the vent and also above in that little triangular space without feathers. If I find any, I'll put a light spray under each wing and under the feathers at the back of the neck.

I may be misremembering, but I believe the Eprinex form of Ivermectin is the only one that kills eggs. Again, I may be not remembering correctly. I use the Eprinex and it's the only thing that I was able to get rid of the fowl mites in my coops. That, plus thorough cleaning, spraying interior of coops with premise flea spray, and dusting the chickens with poultry dust. I don't use Sevin - the poultry dust works in the same way and is less toxic.

In my experience, using the Ivermectin, if I see egg clusters I make sure to spray them. They have never hatched in 8 years of use. The eggs stay in the feathers, unless I pull them, which I sometimes do.

That's sounds real good. What purpose do the birds have that live in the barrels? is it every day accomodations? Or breeding pens? Rooster condos? sitting hens? In the winter, how do you handle foul weather, wind and rain? Do you put an overhang up? Burlap over the opening or?

I really like that Brahma, he is very nice, type, color markings. Does anyone know the large fowl class champions from the show in Florida this past weekend?
