I'm just a lurker but yard of rocks by brassiness are you referring to yellowish tint in the feathers ? I didn't know if it was a reflection or not?

Armorfirelady, if you will look especially in the area of his saddle feathers, you will see the beginnings of some "yellowing". I will take a pix of my brood cock and you will be able to see it better. It is a problem ONLY in my males.

Through a genetics "expert" I am working to add the gene(s) necessary to hide the brassiness (its an autosomnal red issue that I barely understand).....but I have a "recipe" for my line that is supposed to correct it in another 2-3 generations

My friend captured a decent photo of my #1 pick male at 5 1/2 months that I hatched from Jeremy Woeppel/XW Poultry German/Good Shepherd NH cross eggs this year. He carries his tail a bit higher than this..but considering it was 104, he still had his wings tucked decently. He's got some more growing and filling out to do, no doubt....there's 2 other males that look decent for back up. This one was my pick from early on...

Just keep in mind of the salt contents of the other animal foods when feeding the chickens they do not process the salt(delicate excretory systems) as efficiently as the cats and dogs do and remember size comparatives of dogs and  most cats compared to the size of chickens too

good idea Jeff ging chickens rabbit feed also has more salt I think. Many guys give their chickens on the tie catfish floating feed which they mix up in their game bird through on the ground mix. bob

Costco sells a grain free cat food under it's Kirkland Signatures brand, 32% protein with first two ingredients being fish meal and there's no added salt. It's about $20 for a 40lb bag. I don't know about the vitamins/minerals included, wrt chickens, but the inclusion of fermentation products at least sounds good. And the cats like it. The also have a couple grain free dog foods with similar ingredients (choices of primary protein ranges from beef to poultry to fish) but lower protein.

Ingredients:

P.S. It is not about the ingredients at this point. It's about where the food was packaged. That was my mistake. I looked at the ingredients and they were great in that kibble last year. Unfortunately, the kibble was processed at a factory known for repeated recalls and this time it killed my dog. Wow ! Cindy he has really grown.! I want to see more roundness of underline, but he has time to put that on. It's real hard to get the weight on in this heat. Can we see the other 2 boys too ? Love that lush color !

Wellness was touted as a good poultry feed, but it has been sold since then and had a recall. The only dog kibble I know of which has no recalls is Fromm. Small family owned company, Great feed, many recipes, including grain free. Be prepared to search a bit for Fromm. The Diamond dog food fiasco hit many breeders hard.It's getting to be scary buying dog food.I know breeders who lost as many as 5 dogs from that Diamond feed.

You have to watch the SALT ! Birds are very sensitive to it. The other thing you have to know is if you are in either a selenium deficient, or toxic area. Most areas of the East coast are deficient, but there are areas out West where it can be toxic. We regularly boosted Selenium and Vit. E in dairy goats before collecting bucks.That made a huge difference in fertility, but there is a very thin line with selenium.A friend of mine was supplementing it with her show horses. The barn got a load of Alfalfa hay shipped in from a toxic area, and one morning the owners walked into the barn to find most of the horses' tails sloughed off in the stalls. Some lost their hooves too.It took a year to grow new feet and tails on the horses who made it. Be careful.

Vickie...I would also like to see more roundness in front and underline...would not mind a tad smaller comb but it is shaped nicely and connected so that it follows his head too. He is resmbling his german sire more many that I have seen thus far. GREAT temperament! My friend has the small flock NH's in a rural area about an hour from Scottsdale where I reside. She is new to chickens but is earnest in learning the world of poultry and H birds. You are right that in this heat it can be challenging to build and maintain weight especially on a young cockerel. She has been great about sending photos and videos and asking questions...She is going to try to get pics of pullets and 2 other cockerels soon...Here is a video that has most of the flock in a video that my friend did about a month ago at her place.

Nothing like a cockerel feeding frenzy ! Tell your friend if she will get a galvanized hog pan from TSC, and pop rivet it on, instead of that small bottom; she will save a ton of $ on feed ! I'm adding a lot of hulled sunflower seeds to the cockerels' feed right now, in addition to the Flockraiser and CM. It is putting weight on them.

The "rocker", well attached comb is important. You can work on the points later.
