It cost enough for the hinges, so I thought I could cut some costs that way.......in addition the ground moves here and locks change position during the year and don't line up for half of the year. I have four of the 8X8X4 batteries of 4 pens each. I decided a while back that I was going to make everything so that I could walk upright going into them.

i'm going to be making an add-on to my existing pens next week, which will be an 8x8' run space with an 8x3' elevated henhouse along one side, and then divided in half to make two 8x4' runs each with a 4x3' henhouse -- hoping to use these for breeding (and/or isolating broodies) next year. quite inspired by all the recent photographs!

Are you building them yourself? I am pretty handy. Perhaps we can do some work swaps and help each other build coops. Got tools, will travel

I had 4 foot tall cages for over 30 years, that is long enough....... now I see how nice it feels to walk into them upright. There is a point when savings need to take a backseat in favor of comfort. If I knew what I know now I would have started with 8ft tall structures. I am packing up 34 birds to take to a show tomorrow and I can do all of it standing up.

Crawling around to round up birds is vastly over rated !

What the matter Vickie, you don't like chicken poop on your knees?

Not a problem. 3broken vertabrae in my back make bending not a good thing. I've been living with that for45 years, but "Uncle Artheritis" has moved in.The docs have been wanting to invade for 25 years, but I'm still truckin.

Ouch, sorry to hear about your back and uncle arthritis moving in. I was just kidding about the poop your your knees. I doubt any of us on this thread or BYC for that matter are worried about a little poop. Keep on truckin.
