When it comes to helping people find the breed they want I do not have a problem helping people find the breeder they need to contact. I have tried to teach the breeder who does not want to sell eggs that their is another way to help the beginner and that is to ship them ten started chicks that are shiped in a small single nest box by horizion. These ten chicks are shiped overnigh mail by the post office in or around 20 hours. These young birds can make the trip very well with out feed and water for up to three days then a problem comes in to lack of water. Most chicks get to thier new homes in 20 hours but in my case the end up the second day at 8 A.M. at my post office.
Shipping eggs has been a mixed bag of success because of post office handling and reputred air cells which then the egg can not hatch. However there is a new area Iam working on with the post office called special handling. It cost about $8. more and may help the increase in the hatches. If we could only get the post office to place the hatching eggs in the compartment with live birds I think we could get better results in the hatching. But its hard to get them to change or add a few sentances in their regs to make sure the eggs are in a save loction on the Fed Ex plan.

So when you ask me for help I can find most breeds you want and most color varitys however some are so rare and do not look like the pretty pictures in the poutlry catalogs many people dump the breed after a few years. Many breeders are willing to help the beginner and many breeders do not want to fool with eggs and chicks as they do not have time to do this. Many people are tired of the complants of the hatches and the complansts of the customers which I can not blame them. Many people thing they are getting rare gentic line breed chickens and then when they raise the birds find out they are imposters and are just plane hatchery birds that the shipper has lead the customer to beleive they are Heritage or Vintage Poultry.
As Secetary of the Plymouth Rock Club I do not have money in the checking account to place ads in Mother Earth News however, I have written articles in a major Poultry Magazine with about a 50,000 buyers of the magzine by the rack or delevered to their homes. I will let you see the thread of the article. This article really got people in the old fashing barred rocks and you can see just in four years the improvement in this color pattern from pictures on this thead.
I will just plug away helping one person at a time just like Walt does. Some of the breeds you are talking about I have never seen or even heard of. I have read Poutlry Mazines from the 1980s to the 1950s and some of these breeds I have have never heard, seen or seen ads selling them. So when you ask for some of these breeds we may stirke out as we can not find anyone who has them. I think we need to teach people like yourselves to exchange these breeds in a started chick method much like people who share Heritage seeds with each other. It is easy to do all you have to do is hatch the chicks raise them up to about four to five weeks of age. Place ten chicks in the box above take them to your post office and ship them out overnight express to your friend who wants your rare breed. It is a win win expericene for every one and we can share our rare breed with some one who has a interest in the same breed you do. Lets just find a way to help each other and not worring about a Great old Live Stock Club that has served the Fancy so well for over 100 years. bob

The renewal date is July 15th. I am not sure if it is prorated, but it is so close now, it would not make much difference. The new yearbook (2009) will be out in a month.
I know that one member here just joined and received the 2008 yearbook, so she will end up with both.

Walt

I joined in Aug. I just received my packet this week, and the membership card says membership expires 7/1/2011. I also was sent the 2008 yearbook, same as the person Walt mentioned.

You will receive the next one in about a month. As you can see, it is full of ads with contact info. Some people show as individuals, partnerships (I'm Jones and Leonard) and some use farm names. The book is worth much more than the membership fee in my opinion.

I have a question about hatching. I read somewhere that it is best to hatch in the spring. Specifically, it said that if you hatch in the fall and grow out in winter the chicks use all their energy keeping warm and do not grow as well. Is there anything to this? Are fall hatches not recommended?

I agree about the yearbook- I am the "one" Walt mentioned, I think. It's full of helpful lists, like lists of shows, poultry clubs, and a Grand Master Exhibitors list which seems to tell you who has the best of their respective breed. I have been pouring over it, looking for anyone with Delawares, and have found two listings so far. It has the APA constitution, so if you have questions about what they are supposed to be doing, it's right there.

The Fall hatched birds tend to be smaller. They carry the correct size genes, but they are physically smaller in most cases. Fall is a good time to hatch bantams but not large fowl.......or that has been my experience in this very temperate climate here in Calif.

Yes, you are the one. (I will move you out of the crackpot status to helpful chicken person today) It is good to hear that it is going to be useful. Some of the breeds (Dels) are just going to be hard to find, but you might look at the judges listing to find a judge in your area and ask them if they have seen any good Dels (or any breed) while judging. The book has most of the serious breeders of poultry listed, so sometimes it just takes a little legwork.

I did experience that with hatching Delawares. I had a hatch the first of November and a hatch in March. The March birds are noticably larger. I thought it was because I changed feeds, and started using Game Bird feed with the March hatch.

Shoot, guess I will unplug the incubators now.

I will look in the judges lists, too. And thanks for the idea to look at the Marans website. It is not only beautiful, but the chair has offered to advise me re: the Delaware Club!!

Kathy- good question! I was wondering why my kids seemed a bit on the small side weight wise, when Cyn's weren't!
