Wyandottes all the way..... but I also think the RC RIR are eye catching
Our Wyandottes are good egg layers and meat birds, med to large size egg.

sorry, but I am going to make a duck post.......
I know someone was looking for a good line of rouens. I sure wouldn't want to feed too many of these massive ducks. They eat as much as all our call ducks combined

Are those your birds? if so what part of IL are you in?

they are not mine..... they are from Royal Oaks Farm, he is a great guy to deal with.

wyandotte

I would like to hear what you think I should get and your experience them
thanks punky

Rose comb rhode island reds where can you find some?

Plymouth Rocks are you talking Barreds?

Wyandotte What color?

Are you going to get them from a private breeder? or a hatchery.

For me I am going with barred Rock large fowl from Kansas

I have White Plymouth Rocks

I like the Silver Laced Wyandottes that you have seen on this thread.

I dont know any one else who has large fowl wyandottes any better than these.

Have you considered Seroma Frizzles?

just kidding.

The Rouens up for bid are worth more than this current bid.

For the person who wanted Rouens I dont know if you can aford a $100 pair and then $100 to get them to your house.

I am trying to get you some eggs shiped to you or baby ducks. If you are not going to show them you dont have to pay a lot of money for them. The Rouens I would like you to get he does not sell baby ducks or eggs. You got to go with the next person who does have good stock and will ship eggs or baby ducks.
Also, if you live in the South its hard to get to Iowa to pick them up.

Thats why we got to learn how to ship eggs to each other. I just got about a years supply of bubble wrap tonight from work for future egg shipments

Now off to bed get up early and wash some more white chickens. bob

I have hatchery stock wyandotte. However, I have watched the wyandotte thread and contacted a few people with breeder stock wyandottes. . . . and this is what I think . . .

Wyandottes are eye candy - - very pretty.
They act and look like ROYALITY. My SLW is nicknamed "princess" for this reason.
My concern with the wyandotte is EGG SIZE. They are a large bird that lays a med size egg.
The egg production is good - - - they lay a lot of eggs in a year, BUT the size is med.
The breeders I contacted said some lay large and some lay med size eggs. Consistency in egg size is an issue.

If you want eye candy for meat - - -great. However, you want eye candy for eggs
- - - you might be better off with one of the other two breeds: RC RIR or plymouth rocks.

Interesting comment was presented to me in an email with one of BYC more brilliant minds. He thinks we need to make as much effort to preserve our Poultry Press Newspapers from the 30's era and older. His comments about the quality info offered from the folks who taught our Master breeder's teachers. He says they do it to preserve the Newspapers on micro fish. We redigitalize our old classic movies. Why not TRY to preserve the best Poultry publications from the old school days.
Until Dan presented this thought. I never even considered the importance of the US history of Poultry that are in these publications. As a group, we need to start to make some direction towards restoring these newspaper articles. Whether it is scanning or redigitizing them. ALOT is at risk of crumbling away like ALL newspapers do IF left to their own.
Just a thought that hit home on this new to the hobby Old School believer.

A lot of the old poultry info has disappeared over the years, so retaining any info is a good thing.

Walt

This is why I save any pics of old prints I see online and from now on will save them in my photobucket too. I had a computer crash this past spring and lost some good info. I am doing a better job in protecting my more important pics of prints and info. I know a few who don't throw away anything. And these guys have every Poultry Press they ever bought.

I wonder how huge of an endeavor it'd be to get these old Poultry Press's scanned? What a priceless product that would be!

They have high speed auto feed scanners now that are very quick, but I gon't know how well they would handle newsprint.
