Another darger zone for fertility is leg length. If a males legs are too short, he has trouble making that all important connection. Breeders of short-legged breeds, such as the Dorking, have to be careful not to take this trait too far. But it would seem that the over exageration of any trait leads to complications.

It would seem that intentionally breeding one's flock in such a way as to render natural reproduction ineffectual is to harm the breed. Few enough people are committed to these fowl in the first place, fewer still want to make a career out of AI.

Hey All.
I was looking through my Old Poultry Magazines, I saw this and figured you guys would be interested.

It looks like either a Delaware of a Colombian Rock. If you would like me to double check let me know.

I have never pulled out any vent feathers. But, most of the breeders I get my birds from do pull out about a baseball size of feathers around the vent. I have Standard Cochins and Orps, and it seems to me to be no difference in fertility.
I do see the age of cock being more of a factor in fertility. The older they get the smarter they get. They will pick favorites. And in this situation I can see using AI. I never have done it. I have been given a one on one demonstration from a fellow White Orp breeder and APA judge. It does require an up and close attitude. And if you have a cock who only picks one or two out that they like and leave the rest alone I can see AI being a good alternative. For me, only using small pens, and only having a couple of hens per pen. My boys cover their girls. And no one gets away.

Oh ok one more thing I don't even think delawares were created in 1926 not until the 1940s
