When I look at the bunny tail feathers closely, the sicle feathers are narrow and you can almost see through them. The tail feathers that would otherwise function in flight appear short, more flexible than they would be in a flight capable bird, and sometimes missing even without apparent physical damage to cause problem. It is as if they never grew in.

I am going to use the new blood route but see some major headaches with breeding out other characteristics coming from birds bringing in desired feathers.

If you look into the tail of the barred rock above you can see that the main tail feathers are stiff. Ideally almost like primary and secondary wing feathers. If you had one in hand they would be straight without any curve. this is pretty much the result of how the barbules hook up. (Barbules overlap and interlock to give a feather rigidity), Lots of folks don't pay attention to this part of a chicken, so it is a common problem in many breeds. It also shows up in the upper back by the tail in Cochins and white Rocks. The feathers become stringy. These are not feathers you want to be stiff, but is another example of how this problem manifests itself. I have been called a "feather merchant" by some folks. hahaha Feather quality is much more important than a lot of people realize.

I can feel the difference you describe. The feathers I regard as a problem easily split between barbs when flexed. My goal with doms is to get tail to be long and apparently stiff as I interpret depictions of dominiques shown by A.P Carter of 1913. Wings of birds of that time also appear larger as they cover more of flanks than typical of existing dominiques. When I open wings of my doms, they appear stubby in contrast to wings on a game of similar size.

Illustrations of wing size can be misleading unless they have commentary about the body size/wing size and placement to body, etc. A short body bird could appear to have longer/larger wings. Just something I have run across in the past.

BTW - just finished my 2nd hatch of CR chicks.....9 lil' ones in the brooder. Just 91 more to go

I was getting the car gased up and ready to go. About 300 miles up the road. Then my wife told me I have to work tomorrow night.

Matt Lhmon is going to be a judge my old Rhode Island Red Club secetary from ten years ago. Our District Director for District 3 Jim Crain is going to be there. Both super good chicken men.

Tell Matt and Jim Hello and I got to push pills tomorrow night.

My day is coming. I will be really retired by this fall. First Soc. Check is coming. Obama told me he is going to take care of me.

.That is a great show and getting better every year. I have never been there. Keep a eye on Rhode Island Red large fowl. See if any buddy shows good ones.

Also, large fowl Rocks. Watch out for some killer large fowl Cochins. There is a guy in Ga. that has some good ones. Maybe next year we will see Columbian Large Fowl Rocks.

I might even bring and few White Rock Large Fowl from Fla.

Well got to go and watch the outdorr channel. That is the next thing for me to fish or hunt. To cold down here to fish. It was 33 degrees today at 1 pm got three inches of rain. Coming to Georgia Scott watch out.
