Yard full o' rocks :

Evening all.....

Just "dropping by" to report in on the show from Dalton this past weekend. I enjoyed it VERY much and met a lot of wonderful people, some I had only talked with via email a few times.

There were LOTS and LOTS of birds at the show but 95%+ were bantams

Not that I dislike bantams, but I am really into the BIG BIRDS. I saw only 1 RIR that was marginally the correct color (only know that because of Mr Bob Blosl and his sharing) and type...the rest were all production RIRs.

Only BR shown had "feathered legs" ... go figure. Obviously DQ'd.

I did find out that this was predominantly a "bantam show" for 20+ yrs and the LF are just getting back to being shown. There were some really neat looking "little birds"!!! D'Anvers, D'Uccles, Moderns, OEs, Dutch, etc, etc.....it was like a "jelly bean jar" of bantam chickens

Headed to the Newnan show in 2 weeks. Supposed to be more LF at that show

Sorry, no pix to share as I didn't take a single picture

On another note...9 baby Col Rock (LF) in hte brooder as we speak from my Canadian Trio. 6 more due Wednesday, and 15 more behind that. Hatching early this year and hoping to put 75-100 chicks on the ground by late March

Take care all

The show we went to in Stockton a couple of weeks ago was like that out of 2600 plus birds entered over 1500 of them were Bantams.....................I am such a LF snob, but it was interesting to me to see how many people are into small birds. I guess space & feed bills may come into play.

Great to see all those names Bob! I feel blessed to have met/known some of them.

Bantams are easier for people to feed and care for so they are more popular.

Bob,

I sure don't like to handle some of my Bantam Wyandotte roosters..my Large Fowl Wyandotte roosters are gentle by nature and never give me any trouble....those %$@# bantams get pretty darn cocky. I usually cull the ones with an attitude, but I still have problems with those guys when they get some age on them....all except the Silver Penciled Wyandotte Bantams, never had any trouble with them.

The question is where are these lines now thast the breeders are dead? Who bought them. I know hatcheries bought some into those lines to improve their own stock. But did any one or 2 people buy the whole that was left to keep breeding them?

As a 4H leader THANK YOU!

Folks we appreciate your donations and sells of quality birds to our 4H club members. However, if you would not breed or show the bird DO NOT donate or sell the cull to an unsuspecting youth! Though some of these may not be life long poultry fanciers, some will be. Mr. Suiter sold me your culls. Culls you brought to Shawnee Oklahoma each year. he would buy your culls for $5 each and sell them to us for $30-50 each. We thought we were getting top show quality. Did not find out for years. That is jut one reason I am a 4H leader today.

We had a great meeting tonight of the Drew County 4H Poultry Club. My oldest daughter is the president. We delivered the last birds from eggs donated to our club. One pair is a SC male and RC female RIR Bantam. They look really good. Hoping they do well in their new home. They will be shown at several shows near here and I may bring them to Crossroads. I took a trio of Dick Hortsman Barred Rock Bantams to Shawnee. Did not place, but I got to show our club's VP's birds off to Dick himself! they were entered in teh open, as I believe only youth should handle birds entered in the Junior Shows.

Again, thanks folks for donating and selling those quality birds to our 4H club members. The rewards are out of this world!

Bob, this is the only name you need! Seriously, I knew Ralph. had some of his birds directly from him. They were nice. I have some of his line of Buff Orpington Bantams again. I know amny got his large Buffs, just not sure who all introduced them into theirs.

The pullet in my profile pic is Brazelton line bird. No pants on those birds.

Ralph told me once he only hatched from hens that averaged 200+ eggs a year. I am glad to see all his hard work was not lost.
