I know the Rev Asbrook and Gary Overton..I think both would say they are friends of mine. They both have done a good job with SS and frankly they are/were the same strain. Both have done a very good job and both have impressive show wins. Everything that needs to be said has been said and frankly anything further is of no value to this thread.

Yellowhouse why don't you tell us about your Dorkings and I would love to see pictures. This is what this thread is really about. You have a unique breed.

Would love to see the Dorkings of Yellowhouse manor!

Karen, your discussion on discretion was really quite lovely, a definite change in tone and more grounded.

I still disgaree with you and Walt. My one small statement was one of many in a flow of comments and was open for proper rebuttle, which Matt did. I made the comment as part of a dialogue, without holding to it. Furthermore, I'm glad I made the noncommittal comment because it received Matt's retort which allowed me to think about Mr. Overton's Sussex in a new, more positive way.

You, on the other hand, were simply explosive and reactionary in your response and failed to say anything concrete about the stock you defended so extraordinarily vehemently. There's no comment abut their confirmation, weight, width, depth, length, productive qualities or correctness of coloring. Nothing. Indeed, for all of the brouhaha, there has been no substance.

Mr. Overton's reputation has not been threatened by this dialogue, for any reading are going to follow it to it's end, and, in the off chance that someone read that one comment without looking before or after and also assuming that that reader make outstandingly rash conclusions from two sentences, that one reader might be put off, but then that reader, or type of reader, was never going to patronize Mr. Overton in the first place.

Could I have shown more discretion to fit your taste? Yes. I shall endeavor in the future to add more disclaimers when I go fishing for clarifiers.

Your response was outlandishly over the top and strangely rude, while still being humorously quasi-medieval, which I guess is an expression of my taste. It's too bad you didn't simply offer your comment on discretion originally. Then I could have apologized and asked for some more clarity concerning the excellence of the stock in question. With the profound knowledge which your fiery defense implies, I would have followed up with my expression of happiness in learning that there are still some good Speckled Sussex out there.

I think somewhere in here is some kind of apology That ends this thread for me.
Best,

A thorough understanding of the Standard is essential, IMO, in breeding better birds. It starts in the selection of your brood stock, but by no means stops there.

One of my dear friends was a Show winner with Silkies more than 20 years ago, Vicki Karesh. She use to take 1 or 2 birds to a show and would be on championship row every time (she's got an attic full of trophies to prove it!). I asked her once how many chicks she'd hatch to get those 1 or 2. Her answer: 'for every bird I show I've hatched 300 chicks!'

Sure, on Show day, it's about the condition of the bird. But, it is also about selection, lots of chicks, and culling. The Standard was written by folks who were interested in the best utility value of the fowl being shown (whether meat, eggs, gameness, or even beauty). A top quality show fowl should be able to do what it was supposed to do: thus, the best of the best. To get that it takes more than mere good genetics of the brood stock.
Saladin,
I'm alive and well. Now Vickie Dawson. WHO are you?? When I started with culls off traders' row , I did hatch a lot of chicks. After 3 generations of very intense line and inbreeding, I was able to hatch fewer that 40 chicks TOTAL per year in 4 colors : black, buff, grey and white. Some of my nicest whites came from my buffs, and were pure for white.I gave Shorty Polston my last two trios about 12 or so years ago, so the line is still going. Conditioning is my forte...Remember the powder and the crest bows on the girls to sleep in? Fun! I doubt the big BO girls that I have now would appreciate them though ! Maybe fuzzy slippers to keep their feet clean?
