Got mine from Craig's list for $150. It has a Montgumery Wards tag on it and it works exactly like it is supposed to. It holds a ton of eggs. I think it was built to be a hatcher, but I have it set up with the Little Giant auto turners in the top 2 shelves. The only problem I have found so far is that it hatches more chicks than I have room for!! ....stan

You can make a lot of mistakes with a redwood bator and still get great hatches.....not saying you made mistakes, just saying they are the best IMO and they do a great job.

Hi all. I'm new to the world of chickens, but I'll be building my coop soon and plan on filling it with Heritage Delawares to breed and raise. Does anyone here have any? And can you tell a chicken newbie about your experiences with them?

Also, does anyone know any places in the New England area that sells them? It's hard for me to find any in Maine, though I have someone willing to sell me three pullets and a cockerel. I was told you guys might know. :)

I'll definitely be lurking. I hope to see you all around!
Have you checked the ALBC directory? I did not see in any in Maine but there were some listings for other states in the NE. http://www.albc-usa.org/breeddir/search.php

There is also the Delaware Poultry Club http://www.delawarepoultryclub.org/index.html that might have someone.

Maybe I'll have a Mingo or Chippewa line.

Why not Chris. Its your line far and square.

It would be nice to get some folks into Buff Leghorns. Or Buff Rocks. It just depends who comes along with a interest to convert from non standard chickens to old fashion Standard Breed Large Fowl. Maybe we can convert ten next year. bob

Now I like that Buff Rock idea there Bob. If only I had the room for one more breed, I've pondered the idea once or twice before LOL

Might could/will scale down my layers coop if all these NH,BR,RIR lay like they should I probly could move out some of the production types and have spare space, IDK there's still a little spark there for some Buffs. I always loved the color of the Buff Orpingtons just not a big fluffy type guy tho, I do like Rocks and if they can have the same gold color as some of the Orpingtons I 've seen I surely would be interested....but the kicker here is I'm probly right on the verge of too many different projects now. I have one that I haven't even gotten started yet, it is next. I have 10 of the F1 Delaware project girls and an awesome male that I really need to get busy in making F2s and moving on to getting me a strain of those beautiful white and barred birds up and correct to standard. It has worked well for Mrs. Kathy so far, she has had great results

They are being reinvented. There is one and only one person i would get mine from and that's Kathy in Mo. She has crossed the Barred Rock males to the New Hampshire females and is on her third run. You get with her and her list of breeders and you will be happy.

Other wise what is available is light years away from what you would like to have.bob

here are some good pictures of other birds around. Give them all credit they are united and trying hard to improve them. You need to join and learn from them.

Quote: Charlie thanks for infoo. Rodney says to get a fan from Granger. Did you? Also, I see he got wafer in his and in mine the temps swing almost two degrees between on and off. What kind of swings do you get with your black box therostate from GQF? On my incubator I got from them GQF 1701 its about a half a degree and that sucker stays almost dead on at 99,5 degrees.

if you have a good element will that one work just as well or do you need to replace it?

In regards to waterfowl this unit runs circles around the 1701 and thats because of the redwood case.

Look forward on how to gut one out and replace the parts for a beginner. bob

I'll investigate the Delaware Poultry Club. :) Thanks!! Oh dear, what is chicken math?! Anything involving math makes me nervous, haha.

In what way are they being reinvented? If only Kathy was closer, I would look into her. I apologize in advance for all my extremely newbie-ish questions, but I gotta start somewhere, right? Thanks for replying, by the way.

Those Delawares in the pictures are absolutely gorgeous.

I have been raising Delawares for a couple of years and really like them, but I do agree, what is available now is far from the standard of perfection. Mine have been smarter than the average chicken with great personalities. The cocks were not aggressive. They are slow to mature compared to some of my other chickens.

I don't know what the official definition of chicken math is, but it happens when you end up with more chickens than you originally planned on.

if you can get the 3 pullets and the cockerel, then i would start there with what you have. add some other strains like birds from whitmore farms, beth holmes, sandhill preservation and paul harter. hatch, breed and cull ruthlessly. i would wait until kathy in mo had a finished product before getting them and maybe only a rooster then.
