Shade - lots of shade. Shade and water saved mine last year when many lost alot of their birds. We had over 6 straight weeks of 100+ weather here last summer. Drought - folks lost crops and animals. Couldn't even buy a bale of hay without paying a mint.... Hope it is not that bad this year.
boy i remember that kathy..that was terrible..over here we had 5 million bales of crispy green hay and couldnt get a living soul to come help us pick it up..lazy kids want to text and watch tv and thats about it..husband offered good money..but no one wanted to do it so he and i put enough in for the horse and stacked the rest along the woods..if you would have been anywhere nearby, you could have had all you wanted just to keep me from having to stack it on edge of woods..

Yay! I finally found a new timer like my last one. I've been searching all over the internet and nobody has the original model. Called a couple places here in town and walla! $50 bucks later, my chickens may survive the summer! I'm so happy! After next payday, I might go get another one, just in case, that way I'll have it.

It's not bad out right now,
89° F
93° F Heat index
51% Humidity
29.76 S Barometic Pressure

Got up to 105 here today.

Ran the water hose from the well into the upper pond which has a little ditch that looks like a stream that runs to the lower pond then from it across the lower pasture out to the road. That helped give cool water to all the ducks, guineas, the horse, cows and free range chickens, all the coop birds, cage birds and dogs - I changed the water out a few times and put soda bottles full of frozen water in with the rabbits.

So far everything seems to be doing ok, but supposed to get hotter the next few day.

Days like this I'm very thankful for all the large shade trees.

I think our high was 98-99,
Between the livestock and the garden I hate to thing how much water I used. Good thing my well is deep.

Shade trees on the south side of the house are great.

I have a question and hoped you 'old timers' could would be the best to answer it :) I have gotten four rubber eggs from one of the Orloffs despite being on layer feed, free ranging and having oyster around. What do you make of this latest find? What can I do to rectify this??

It is rubbery again, large and had this cord with gel in the end.

If this chicken has just started laying, give her some time to get her egg system working correctly. If it has been laying for some time, I don't have help for you.

Parasites can cause this, as well as not enough vitamins. For worms, you can take a manure sample to a vet for a float test and treat according to the resutls. It is supposed to cost less than $10.00 for the test.

You can also try giving her Apple cider Vinegar--one ounce per gallon. You get shell less eggs after a molt too.

I hope this helps her.
