Some respiratory illnesses can cause problem such as yours but sometimes too the hens delicate little systems seem to get "out of time" so to say just watch her for a couple of days and see if this continues, most times they straighten themselves up in couple of days if not then there's probly something(disease,injury,tumor) up in the reproductive tract.

one thing u can try is to scramble some eggs with the shells and maybe add oyster shells to it... they will eat it like crazy and that will make sure she has enough calcium...

It didn't occur to me to put oyster in their eggs. I read one of the earliest doctrines on caring for chicks which stated you could feed them scrambled egg and I even keep their shells to dry and add to the the garden (great for tomatoes) the dogs food and on the chickens. I feel like this was an obvious one I missed.

I put garlic, and DE in food as well. Cider vinegar is in their water. This Orloff hasn't laid in a while, though not from a molt, and this is all I think I get from her- rubber eggs that is. The cord really concerned me. I'll try the illness forum. Thank you all for the suggestions.

BTW- went to a chicken event in Augusta Maine and saw my first heritage Buff Orps. The size of goats!! I can't wait to see some girl in Hollywood try to put one of those in her purse!

If your chickens are not free range try feeding some canned cat food. It will give them some "meat" protein like they would get from eating bugs etc. And if they are free range it is an added treat from them. In the winter is when I try to feed some canned food since the bugs are hibernating. Keeps them happy.

there is a youtube vidieo that somone posted in here..but there is a little more to it than that like keeping equipment clean , hot water do not use soap if you can help it in pipettes ect..but there are also classes given here and there like cornell U ..there are several threads in here on the subject..if you have a hen that you are keeping show fit, or has a past injury that prevents her from standard breeding..and shes valuable, its worth learning AI.

Parasites can cause this, as well as not enough vitamins. For worms, you can take a manure sample to a vet for a float test and treat according to the resutls. It is supposed to cost less than $10.00 for the test.

You can also try giving her Apple cider Vinegar--one ounce per gallon. You get shell less eggs after a molt too.

that honestly looks like the hen ate a peice of plastic that blew into the pen..its even twisyed around like a bread bag that happenen to pick up an egg down the pipe..strangest thing ive ever seen..

she said piping hot water but not hot enough to melt the pipettes..soap left in there would kil semen..also she said people please ' you dont need to turn your hens upside down..just rub her back..and there is nothing to do much with thehen, they dont like to be messed with for a long time either..she said make sure you AI after your hen lays her egg for best results..if there is a big egg in the pipe it some times wont get by. so best results wait till after she lays the egg.

there was an article in a poultry mag that said you would probably not see that agin out of that chicken..it happens most often in pullets and hens that are old..they shed a part of tract and theit irritates the system enough that it starts a soft shell egg passing throu, they had a pic of that exact egg enomoly including the long attachment.
