Bob Blosl's Heritage Large Fowl Thread

For a short time, Nettie Metcalf DID call her breed, pea combed RIRs but she quickly discarded the name because she felt that it hurt her breed. They did not come from RIRs any more that RI whites did.

Here' what I found on their heritage that they were originally bred from this is not the only source i have found this info either.

It says she crossed Bared Rock, Buff Cochin ,and some BBRed gamefowl into the mix.

They were bred before RIRs, I have heard of this too, well they were both bred into existence around the same time.

Sorry armchair experts, but Reds have been put into Buckeyes. The SOP does not say that and anyone who uses wiki as a reference is just naive, I can go there right now and post that RIR's were put into Buckeyes and then it is true. lol. I am not saying that this was done when they were first developed, (because I will admit to know knowing...unlike the "experts").....but I have also heard of this occurring. I had heard this directly from Grant Malone the biggest promoter of Buckeyes ever. You won't believe the people who really know what they are talking about, but you believe everything some newbie posts here. This is what is discouraging to the old timers that try to help you .Reading certain publications is a way to begin to learn, but people like Bob have talked to thousands of people raising birds over the years and has insight that you folks just don't have and more than likely will never have because of your narrow views and limited information.

This kind of thing reminds me of a bunch of adolecents that know everything and their parents don't know squat. I can't speak for Bob, but I can tell you that this kind of stuff makes me want to stop coming here. Why try to help people when they already know more than I do. I gotta say that I wish I could have learned this so fast and saved all that time the last 50 years. I am always surprised that I have learned so little compared to the folks of BYC. Maybe I need to go study Wiki.

BTW: LF Cochins are used as meat in other countries and in at least 5 high end eateries here in Napa/Sonoma. You pay extra for them lol.

Actually Met calf called her breed a Buckeye Reds then Rhode Island Red as advised by Buffington (a Rhode Island Red Breeder) because there was already a Pea Comb Red and her breed looked very similar to it. It wasn't until the Rhode Island Red club did away with the slate under color did she decide to call her breed a Buckeye. In that time she did received eggs from Red breeders.

Another Idea on the covering of the wire sides for the cold spells (which are usually short and sweet here in the deep south as Chris knows all well)LOL is to staple viscuine or what I do is cut those seemingly everlasting plastic feed sacks up and use them as a tarp-like pieces and staple them to the sides and this is easily done in seconds and easily removed rather quickly for the warm days, and too, also one could permanently attach the top and roll them up and secure them when not in use and roll them down and fasten them when needed. Just a few helpful hints. Most of all my pens, coops, barn, and hen houses are completely open or 3/4 open sided too as Chris mentioned the heat is more of a concern than the cold here they (chickens) can pretty much handle the cold temps here all but windy and cold wet rain.

I use rubberized roofing and roll it up and down as needed until it warms up then I roll it up and tie it up at the top of the chicken house out of the way. My chicken house is all wire so I can keep it cool in the summer. Thought I'd give my two cents worth.

Walt, and Bob, we so appreciate your coming here to teach us. This is my main thread on BYC. I only browse all the other threads.
I send newcomers here because I know your teaching is so valuable and willl save them years of mistakes and heartbreak.
I was heartbroken when Mr. Miller left the SOP thread. He actually knew Wid Card and I had so much wanted to discuss my fav author with him.
But ya'll are still here and we on this thread have such a valuable doorway into veteran breeding wisdom. I come from 15 yrs. in
the dog world and am here to tell you that ,there, it takes years to make the contacts to get such veteran breeders to share their
knowledge as we have here in poultry just for the listening.
Is there anyone here who doesn't know that Walt is Head of the APA Standard Committee and that he , Bob Blosi and NYREDS ,among others here, have 1/2 century each experience in poultry breeding?

I knew you were old enough to remember him. ahahaha

When he shook hands with a person a Buckeye nut would end up in your hand. Vickie....if he told you RIR's were introduced to Buckeye's would you believe him? I did..maybe I should have asked someone on BYC........oh that's right BYC wasn't around in the 60's.

The old timers did all kinds of hybridization that was word of mouth and was never recorded.....some of what they did wasn't even shared with friends.

I think that it is great that some of the folks on here study the roots of breeds, but I have a lot of experience with that as we research how things happened and how it relates to the APA SOP. There is nothing wrong with questioning things, but there are several ways to do that without sounding as if you are an 'expert" that has all the answers. Nobody has all the answers.

Walt, please, PLEASE don't you (or the other OTs) ever get discouraged and leave. Know that there are PLENTY of us relative 'newbies' to chicken raising who are humbly here hanging onto everything you OTs say - every.bit.of.it. You don't even know me but would be shocked to know just how much I've learned from you here and in the OT thread - and how I seek out every OT post I can find amongst some of the rubbish around here because a whole thread may be worthless saving for what you, Al, Fred, Bee, Dragonlady, bob...and so many bonafide oldtimers have to say.. You OTs are an invaluable resource and it would be such a tragedy if you let a few uppity whippersnappers run you off.
