Great, sounds like the humidity is at a good level! Yes, opening the bator during external pipping, as this little one has done, can suck the moisture out of the egg and the chicks stick to the inside of the shell and die. So you should never open the lid when there is pipping unless it's an emergency. If I HAVE to open the lid, I have a spray bottle filled with room temp water and after quickly opening the lid, I will douse the eggs and everything in the bator with my spray bottle and then quickly shut the lid.
