Bob white quail thread!!

24-30% protein game/turkey starter feed?

At least 2 waterers out of the light for a cool drink? I like my light in one end with one water on the edge of light and other in cool side. If lights in the middle I'd make sure water is on both sides.

Do you have open feeders, even a non-waxed paper plate is better than ones with "head holes" that I prefer for older chicks/adults? I actually prefer the chicken water dishes for quail chicks. They seem tall enough to keep enough in but also short and large enough the chicks can take turns walking around in it eating

No chance any chemicals have been stored in anything? The plastic bins are getting to hot and off-gassing chemicals? Are they on cedar shavings (I use pine shavings myself and I've heard rumors cedar will do what your describing)

I'll check on the starter protein. Might get new today, just in case.

I could add another waterer since the light is in the middle.

No chemicals. The bin is 1-2 years old. Don't think it's off-gassing now. I can't smell anything, anyway. They're on newspaper, covered w/paper towel. I've put some yard grass clippings in there to try to dissuade toe-pecking.

I raise birds in large numbers. I hatched 1700 about 4 weeks ago loosing bird during the first two weeks is common it doesn't mean your doing anthing wrong about 10 percent is average

Wow, likely us with less can afford some more time than you guys with thousands more. I lost 1 out of 100 or so that came out of the incubator alive. I had Some that needed to be put in the food. I prefer a chick waterer for their food- the red bottom that screws on a mason jar to the 1st 2 weeks.I don't use the mazon jar, just dump some food in. They struggle with the "head-hole" feeders I prefer early on.

Im not saying anything bad, just different management when youve got 50 vs 1700.

Your right there are some differances raising a thousand birds vs 100 but not as much as you think. Still us small waters and paper towels for food. My brood house is 400 square ft. With 4200 btu gas heater and some thermostat controlled electric heaters it's pretty neat. One big pen! I've spent a lot off time researching and have talked to a lot of growers 10 percent is just a good rule if thumb. If your losing more than that something is wrong. Could be temperature, weak hatchlings( the ones that get help), or a number of things that can effect such small bird.
