Kathy,

Don't question your decision if you are. It was the right one in my eyes. Yes, they are beautiful and obviously we are all animal lovers here but there is a line. That cat would have crossed it sooner than later and most likely already had a great meal with your birds. I am having coyote troubles at the moment, lost three birds this week in broad daylight, the thing has no fear. They are in lockdown and miserable. I am hoping the darn thing moves on but there are a zillion others just waiting. Yes, I feel bad for them, I really do, it is not their fault that they are being driven out of their homelands, it is ours. But we also have to protect what is ours.

We have differing opinions about how to protect our birds. Each has to live with the method we've chosen and circumstances are different for different people. I think most people on BYC are wildlife lovers, but we are chicken lovers first. At some point, you must put your foot down and not offer your birds up on a silver platter for the wildlife buffet. Either you build Ft Knox coop and keep them inside, which still isn't foolproof, or you stay vigilant and get a guardian dog and a gun.
One problem I have had lately, although I have had no losses yet, is that I have an ignorant neighbor who feeds the raccoons, foxes, coyotes, etc, scraps from her kitchen. She apparently thinks we live in a Disney movie and that they will eat only her food and not my chickens who live 275 ft from her door. She does not understand that what she is doing is endangering herself as well as my family and my birds, whose eggs she loves. And it's illegal, I believe, as well. She says, "Well, I just love the wildlife. Maybe they dont know what chicken tastes like."

Then I had to tell her about the Barred Rock feathers I found at the mouth of the fox's den 250 ft from my chicken coop; thankfully, not MY Barred Rocks!
I think we've about exhausted this subject anyway, dont you people? Why doesn't everyone just agree to disagree here and move on, hmm, before it gets locked down?

I just want to make clear the purpose of this forum.
This forum is for dealing with predators and pests. Period.

Although some ways are not considered ideal to some, it serves the purpose of removing the offending predator. If you have an idea or a helpful comment, please do reply. If it is a sarcastic comment about the disposal or capture of a predator, please keep your thoughts to yourself. We are not here to judge one another on methods or ways and means.

For instance, Trapping..this is a legal defence and it is not open for debate whether you prefer this method or not. This forum is designed as an aid to those who are having predator problems. It is not a debate forum on ethics.

Please keep this in mind as we all learn from one another how to deter predators. Thanks.

So if guns kill people , then I guess I can blame my computer on miss spelled words. You know every one here has gone nutts over this thread. Here a couple months ago I posted pictures of a skunk we killed after it was trapped in our live trap. And you know what no the bob cat may not be the top predator for attacking people. But neither are foxes and like I posted ealier over by Denver there were a family of foxes living in a park. They got used t people and one tried to eaT a little girl acrossed the street from the park. No it may not take one a adult, but these guys have kids, Hello!! It's also hard to keep a bob cat out of a chicken coop, they can climb, and dig. And hey lets face it a cat that size can go through wire. My brothers worked for a fur farm a long time ago, and they had bobcats, and I promise you all that its not any easy animal to contian let alone keep away from chikens. And after fur farms became illegal they got a licsence to keep a adult pair of them. Guess what happend? They thought that is was nothing more than an over sized pretty kitty and then quite treating them like wild animals. One day they walked into the cage to feed them and the cat attacked. ripped the guy up pretty bad. So even though it was in captivity, it still proves they can tear somebody up pretty bad. And the guy the cat tried to eat was about 200 lbs. and 6'4". Now you can sit around and sling mud at Kathy and her family for "braging" but in the end they did what was nessacery. If they would have called the Divison of Wild life they probably would have came out and drilled a bullet through it to. I know that what they do up here. Once a animal figures out humans provide easy food for them they wont stop coming to areas where people are. These pictures arent graphic and show nothing more than the size of the animal. I am also sure that there was only one shot used to kill it. If you never even been hunting or ever watch a skilled hunter shoot a animal. Then there is no way you could understand that a animal thats wild would suffer less by being shot then if it was captured and hualed off and then taken to the vets clinic and put to sleep. And no one here needs to start in with hunters and KATHY being cruel to shoot animals. There are just as many people here that hunt and will kill any and all predators near their livestock. My family Hunts, and I can honestly say I would rather go out and kill a Elk, or a deer.Or raise my own beef pork and what not. than go to the store and buy meat. And their is two reasons behind this. One its cheaper, two I know full well that the animal didnt suffer, and three because I know that what I am eating isnt diseased. And no FDA doesnt look at every cow or chicken that goes thruogh the conveyer belts and on its way to your house. Hunters do not torter animals, and I highly doubt that this Bobcat did anything but died before it hit the ground. If this thread offends anyone then they dont have to look at it. And should consider stay away from the threads on pests and predators. Or anything that may suggest a dead animal. These threads have been going on for a while. And they will continue to keep adding new threads. I dont know how new a lot of you guys are that are up in arms over this. Every so often these threadsw will get posted and agian most people will kill anything that will possibly hurt their poultry. And I would do the same. I dont know about most of you but I am rather fond of my birds, and have spent a lot of money on them for them to get fed to any, skunk, bobcat, coyote, mountian lion, snake, turtle, raccoon, opossum, stray dog, cat, or any other thing that thinks my birds would make a good meal. Most people who dont like guns have never even been tuaght about them. And it's totally wrong to sit and accuse every person who has a gun to be a murder. I have 13 guns in my home. Never once have I killed some one. And if I did it would be my doing not the guns. Its like saying that you didnt build your chicken coop but only your hammer did. That is impossible for a hammer to do the building alone. Same thing with guns, they dont just point them selves and blow so one or something away with out a person behind it. So come on everyone this isn't the end of the world. And they didnt kill the last Bobcat on earth there are plenty more prowling around, and reproducing. So pleas chill out, and quit with the drama. Its fine, they did what they had to do. And it was their right to kill it. And it is also their right to post that they killed abobcat that had been after their chickens. Thats why we have pest/predators catagory. It is their choice to post it, and its your chopice to look at it or not. So lets stop this and talk about chickens
