In the Brooder
Hello! I live in a house with my fiance and twin sister. I'm the researcher, so I run the accounts and start projects (my fiance is better at finishing them lol). But don't be confused since I use "we" a lot to refer to us as a group.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are new to chickens. We (my sister and I) bought a house that had a chicken coop in Nov 2021 and have wanted chickens ever since. We went to the Tractor Supply and got 6 chickens back in April. Then we went back like 3 more times to get more haha
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 18 chickens right now.
(3) What breeds do you have?
3 Golden Comets - 9 week old hens
2 Rhode Island Reds - 9 week old hens
1 Cornish Cross that was labeled a White Leghorn
- 9 week old hen, Yellow
1 Olive Egger - 8 week old rooster with no tail, CharBlue
2 Speckled Sussex - 8 week old hens, Doug the Cat and KFC
1 Bearded Mille Fleur D'uccle Bantam - 8 week old hen, Little
1 Mille Fleur D'uccle Bantam - 8 week old rooster, William (the teeniest tiniest boy)
5 Ameraucana - 3 weeks, (we want those colored eggs!)
2 Light Brahma - 3 weeks
1 Orpington - 3 weeks
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I like that they go bock bock and eat spiders. My long term plan to keep spiders out of the house uses chickens and hummingbirds.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm interested in permaculture and chaos gardening. We just put in a bunch of fruit trees and shrubs. My veggie patch has been doing well.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
There are 3 humans, 5 cats and 18 chickens. We all work in IT. I work for the government, my fiance works for AWS and my sister is in the Navy. We are all 27.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Every time I was researching about the chickens and issues I was having with them, one of the top results would be a thread through here. So I figured since I kept coming here anyways, I might as well join for the house.
If anyone wants to name some chickens, that'd be cool. We need like 10 names haha. How do people even name their chickens if they have more than one of the same? Our golden comets and RIRs look the same and we can't tell them apart.
