Intriguing idea...do they just provide heat or electricity, too?
We keep our heat set really low and use a woodstove to play the keep-it-warm-enough-so-the-heat-doesn't-kick-on game.
Thermal solar panels are cheap and incredibly efficient. They produce hot water you use to heat the house, heat your hot water, and even heat a pool.
Photovoltaic panels, the ones that make electricity, are very expensive and very inefficient.
It's hard to beat a woodstove though.
The woodstove is AWESOME! It's in the basement, but a previous owner of the house encased it in a hood with a blower that blows the warm air right into the ductwork of the house, so it doesn't take long at all to warm up the whole house. It's furthest away from the bedrooms, so they stay cold, but I sleep better in a cold bedroom, so that works out well.
