We have had on going issues with coyotes. I have had them on my front porch chasing a chicken up there when they were free ranging. I had three of them in my yard the other day and my dog went after them. MOST of the time my chickens are in their pen, but twice a week I like to free range them for the afternoon. I am sick and tired of having to be on such alert for the dang coyotes, they come into my yard and even if i knock the window they just look at me like "what are you planning on doing about it?".

Well I've finally decided Im through being nice and just avoiding the coyotes. I've looked up the laws and have a plan. Shooting them is the only answer. We are going to buy a new rifle tomorrow and then I am going to set out a few of my pullets in one of my light weight dog kennels in the yard up from where they enter my property. Sit and wait for them. Where I will be sitting they will have to go past me to the chickens and then if they want to exit they will be forced to run past me again so I will have two oppourtunities to shoot. No more Mrs. Nice Dog Trainer. LOL

You go girl!!!!
When you buy the rifle ask if they have a rabbit distress call. My dad and I use to hunt 'yotes and the call works like a charm.

Unfortunately it seems opening this kind of topic around here is like opening a can of worms to some folks. I'd say you should first contact your Game Warden and what they tell you to do you could come back here and get advice on. If they say trapping...there are trappers to advise you. If they say shoot them...there are hunters to advise you. If they say leave them alone...well there is the coop design and construction section. Sorry, but these threads often turn to arguments quickly. Contact local authorities first to find out what's legal above all.

Thanks for the advise

I have looked into the laws and have talked to my neighbor about it yesterday, he hunts regularly and is very knowledgable. I have looked up my laws online.

**edit to add: no they don't trap in this area. The animal control won't do anything about coyotes so its up to the home owner to fix it.

Cindi you are correct.
In Missouri hunting season on coyotes is 365 days a year with the exceptions of turkey and deer seasons in which you may not chase or pursue them. But if your sitting in the stand and one wonders by...

In most states if a predator is threatening, chasing, injurying or killing livestock you have a right to protect your property. My guess is that since a coyote is not considered endangered shooting it is probably legal to protect your livestock.
But a call to you conservation agent will clear those muddy waters.

Ok i just got off the phone with Fish and Wildlife. Im not within city limits so legally I can shoot and kill any animal threatening me, or my animals. She even suggested i drag the dead coyotes into the woods after wards to feed the others so I might shoot more later. Plus she also told me i can get a permit and hunt for fun LOL She was very very nice.

Also to be more legally correct. I called the county and had them look up my address to make sure that I'm not within city limits. I am not and I may shoot an animal on site if it is bothering my livestock or pets.
