I guess for now, we can take suggestions and we can all go from there

I have heard the book The Fine Art of Racing in the Rain is good. Don't know the author. The book is a bout a dog and his family.

The Rising Tide:The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and how it Changed America By John M. Barry, but I fear that it may be a BIG book.

There were some other suggestions people made here that sounded interesting.

The Poisonwood Bible is probably one of my all time favorite books! I have most of Kingsolver's work. Some of it is politically motivated which turns some people off a little, but I love it. I like Animal, Vegetable, Miracle too it is not fiction though but more of a living off the land, eye opening book about her personal life about farming and growing and eating thier own food as well as lots of info about genetically modified seeds etc.
