Have you read any of the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris? They are a bit sci-fi/fantasy but are also humorous. The HBO series "True Blood" is based on them. I don't know if psychic ability, withces, vampires, werewolves and shapeshifter are too out ther for you. The books are modern, and the heroine is a southern gal with good manners who happens to live in a town filled with mysterious people and creatures. The books are good light fun, you might want to check those out.
