Boot for curled toes on 3 month old chicken **Update w/pics**

Thank you, no I couldn't see the cardboard. Makes sense there is something on the bottom though! I found an old plastic gift card I can use but cardboard might be stronger. I just need to find some sort of tape or very strong bandaids. When she was little, she left stuff alone that I put on her legs and feet, but now she pulls everything off!

Thank you, they sure do. I always wonder if the time will come when it's best to let her go, but she's still doing so well otherwise. The splayed leg has me bothered. One option is to remove it, the other to leave it. It's hard to know what the right decision is even based on all the information I have.

MissPrissy, can't wait to see a picture. I meant to ask how the chick in the picture was doing.

How often can splayed legs be corrected with the brace holding the legs together?

I don't know but I've read a lot of stories on the site where splayed legs have been corrected. My vet says he knows of a lot of chickens and ducks that live full lives with uncorrected splayed legs.

I've had her since she was just a day old and I hobbled her legs for the first month of her life. I thought it worked but after awhile, the leg went back splayed. Now, she is almost full grown, thankfully just a banty, and she is having trouble getting around with her weight. She was doing ok till her toes curled on the good leg so I'm hoping that uncurling them will work.

I wish you the very best with your little one.

My Spitzhauben hatched yesterday, and all three have curled toes (now in Band-Aid boots), and one has a splayed leg as well (now in a Band-Aid brace). I have to stand it upright every five minutes! I hope that after a day or so it will be able to right itself. Am I dreaming?

Update**

I made Quincy little "moon boots", as I'm calling them, lol. I didn't have medical tape and the bandaids I had were not big enough or strong enough, so I went with the all purpose duct tape over cardboard as a temporary fix till I get to the store. They aren't beautiful and she wasn't happy (I did it outside so she could feed on grass afterwards), but she is standing again. She hasn't been able to do this for over a week and has been very frustrated. She doesn't like a messy cage but when you can't stand up to eat, you make a mess!

She's a bit stressed - panting - right now, but she did the same thing when I hobbled her legs too. She's ringing her bells which usually calms her down. I was going to cut them down like dlhunicorn suggested, but the larger surface seemed to help balance her. I decided to do both feet, even the splayed one. It seems to help her get around so we'll see. The toes are curled on that leg too but basically "dead" so I don't know how much good it will do for them. I refuse to give up on this little girl!

Do you think there will be an ill effects from the duct tape?
