I really like Shih Tzus and Havanese. They are nice dogs. Cute, friendly. Pretty smart I think. Papillions are another one I love. Or you could get a terrier if you want something with a little more personality lol

Those are nice breeds!! I really like them!! I also really like Border Terriers and of course rats and Bostons lol

that makes sense though but I’m sure you could train them like most other dogs.

There again start early enough more partial to the cairn than the westie

I wasn't sure if that instinct could be controlled. My rat terriers are a bit less feisty, so it was never an issue. They mostly want to rat and hunt mice. Also I didn't know if the westie and cairn were big hole diggers, another thing I don't wish to deal with.

I think they can be trained not to. You actually may have more of a problem with the bird dogs at first but they’re so biddable and smart they should easily be able to learn that those birds are off limits.

I’ve heard of people with Labs and such who they bird hunt with but the dogs learned that the owner’s poultry are off limits even though they hunt other birds.

They’re smart and catch on quickly and I’m sure a terrier could too. They mostly seem to be interested in rats and mice and stuff anyway haha

Gator used to dig holes all the time but usually only in the garden or under a bush or the deck or somewhere else shaded. Just to cool off. Though he did also sometimes dig in the yard (usually in a spot that was already dirt) because he was weird and liked to dust bathe. and sometimes he would dig under stumps or the wood pile in pursuit of rodents lol

But he never really dug in the yard or without good reason.

I was wondering about a bird dog and all my free range poultry. My Aussies never looked twice at them. My boxer and bulldog mix were both killers, but are now okay as long as I watch them and remind them. My Chihuahua rat terrier will eat any bird I pick up, but she mostly leaves them alone except the ducks she loves to chase. The geese managed to pull her pant hair through the fence last fall and boy was she spitting mad, air snapping like crazy at those geese who just laughed and honked at her.

So will sporting breeds bother my birds? I can't really run down a dog anymore because of all my replaced joints. Maybe I'm back to an Aussie.
