Birds will eat it whole, but remember to make sure they have adequate grit access this time of year. I'm not sure where you are at, but where I am there's about 3 feet of snow on the ground, so I have to provide grit so the birds can digest whole seeds. Oyster shells do not really count as grit. I recently read somewhere that using oyster shells as grit is like giving someone false teeth make of chalk.
