Birds will eat it whole, but remember to make sure they have adequate grit access this time of year. I'm not sure where you are at, but where I am there's about 3 feet of snow on the ground, so I have to provide grit so the birds can digest whole seeds. Oyster shells do not really count as grit. I recently read somewhere that using oyster shells as grit is like giving someone false teeth make of chalk.

BOSS is black oil sunflower seed (husk included). I feed it whole. They love it.

Yes, I know what it is- been giving it for years. Different types of sunflowers give different kinds of seeds and each has a name. I was wondering what type of sunflower to order from the catalogs.

Ok. I see what your are thinking. If the seed catalog doesn't say what the variety is used for in the description the I would have to ask them what they intend it for. If you are looking in flower catalogs then they might have to dig themselves. Truth I have planted many types over the years, but I just use the BOSS seeds I buy for feeding. I assume that feed seed companies have names for their strains, but they all are to be grown for the same purpose.

I bought 20 lbs of BOSS at TSC and mixed it in with the 50 lbs scratch that I bought at TSC and my chickens won't touch it. They eat the scratch and leave all the BOSS. I wish I hadn't mixed the two together.
