I went out and bought BOSS and got home and read the back of the bag and it said do not feed to domestic birds. I'm new at this and now concerned. I bought them from the bird feed section.....there was none in the chicken section. Why does it say that. Anyone with insight?

Boss is fine for your chickens, you need grit of course, it is considered to expensive in my area to feed to chickens. Here as well it is displayed in the bird feeder section of the stores. I use a fair amount of it. I much prefer it to corn as an addition to my scratch and or a treat in and of itself. There are a number of grains that you can feed as well, that are used for pigeons and such, higher protein levels than chickens require. But they can eat it just fine as part of a good management system.

I really like BOSS for the nice sheen it seems to put on the birds feathers. They are just beautiful in the sunlight, those green, blue, purple colors just shimmer with light. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (BOSS) is a nice treat for you and your flock.

So yes it is an off label use, but should work for you as it has for me and many others here on BYC. Don't feed to much of it, or anything, at one time. Start off with a little and then add over time. We are always in a hurry, animals not so much.

Black Oil Sunflower Seeds are fine in small amounts,
There is better grains and seed out there depending what you was going to use the BOSS for.
The biggest problem with BOSS is that it is 28 -30 percent indigestible fiber that tends to stay in the bird for a long wile.
