Boy, the cost of a "chicken vet" is outragious...

I think this is the only forum on the internet where you'd see that exact post in reference to someone offering really helpful info!

I'm not sure where you are but Dr. Dan Famini that works at the Humane Society in Sonoma County is an excellent doc for chickens/poultry. You can call them for info or an appt at 707-280-1198. He's a really nice guy, grew up around chickens all his life and has a special interest in them. In another chicken group I'm in, he came to a yearly event we had and talked about chicken health. This year we are having him again and we are also doing a wet lab/poop lab to see what is floating around in our chicken's poop.

Never thought I'd be excited to look at poop under a microscope!

If you arent in that area.. maybe he can recommend someone in your area?

Good Luck!

I'm down south of SF on the peninsula and I recently ran into this exact problem (sick chick died in a couple of hours, no good vets around, wanted $160 for necropsy, etc.).

But I'd love to hear about the event Nancy mentioned. I'd probably make the drive up to Sonoma to attend...

badger,

Sorry to hear about your Chicken, the event i mentioned is tied to a yahoo group called Wine country Chickens or chickenchatcoop.

As far as the necropsy... you can mail your chicken to UC Davis for a free necropsy, you just pay your postage and of course you don't get the chicken back if that's important to you.
PM me your email and I'll send you the details on how to do that. It's a really detailed necropsy that they email you.

I'm in Michigan, and our state vet (at Michigan State University) charges $150 for a necropsy. It's frustrating, because if you have an illness if a small, backyard flock, you often times cannot afford that much for a necropsy, but you sure as heck DO want to know what's going on.

Yea I know a couple that have used this service that found out it was a diet related problem that they could have easily fixed and were able to with the rest of their flock. I am surprised that a university charges that much.

UC Davis is a Vet school and it's really
not costing them anything and the students can learn a lot from a diverse group of chickens sent to them from different areas with different issues... seems like a win .. win for everyone.

The Senior Vet students may do the actual necropsy , but only on their rotation through Pathology. The actual diagnosis is made by the PhD candidates with the supervision of the Professors.

Whoever does it, students learn from it and get a more diverse group of chickens was my point. Lab animals cost $$ and these chickens are sent at the cost of the owner.

UC Davis also does vet care at a cheaper rate. I took my dog there for his tear duct problem.
What she quoted as a price in MI seems way out of line for a teaching school.
