Just went to check for eggs and she was in the coop making a lot of noise and acting like she wanted to get in the nest. She didn't and ran out so I snapped these pictures. You can see from her tail feathers to the middle of her back the reddish glow of her white feather turning to red.this is interesting, id b very interested in pix if you can. i honestly cant tell you why this would happen but im curious all the same.
Well, just found two eggs in the backyard. I'm wondering if one of them belongs to my BR. I had two hens get in the nest today, sing the egg song, but no eggs in the nest. It might be my fault, when I opened the outside door to the nests I scared the BR and the hen going to get into the nest. Her color change just involves her feathers. She eats and drinks and acts like all the other hens except she's bossier. Today she got in a nest (again), sang like she laid an egg but no egg.
Don't think it's dirt, we don't have red dirt here and none of the other hens are changing feather colors. We'll just wait to see how much redder she gets. I bought five black baby chicks that were suppose to be BR and the other four turned out to be Australorp. Which is okay with me.Oops! I should have noticed your post was different, pfields. I see the difference in feather color in the photo & am not sure what causes that. We have something similar: Our silver laced wyandotte started out with white in her head & neck feathers, but now they look dirty compared to the rest of her white feathers. Chickens are very clean, so perhaps it's dirt absorbed by excess oil from the preening gland?
