Brabanter breed standard problem

The Spitzhauben was imported into the US in the 1950's.

I am not sure when the Brabanter showed up here. I saw a photograph of a gentleman in the US holding one several years ago. When I contacted him, he said he had sold the birds but didn't remember to whom. He also didn't know of any breeders in the US. I find that suspicious, since I know Ideal did not import them.

The Brabanter nearly became extinct in the Netherlands in early 1900's but it was bred with German stock among others to help revive the breed. The Brabanter is most closely related to the Owl Beard. The only differences in the two appear to be the crest (none or very small in the Owl Beard) and the shape of the beard. The Owl Beard has one full continuous full round beard, while the Brabanter has a three-clump beard. To my knowledge, there are no Owl Beards in the US.

Hi, glad to find some knowledgable people maybe I can have your advice?
These two birds are confusing me a lot...they came with an order of gold laced polish...but really don't look like them other than the colour.
I happened upon a pic of a brabanter and recognised the female! she looks more like that breed!
Still wondering...

Appreciate your help.

Those Polish do look a lot like Brabanters.

Cool info on the Owlbeard. Too bad I can't read Dutch. There is a lot of info on Brabanters, but not in English.

The more I do manage to read about them, the more I would like to improve what we do have here in the US. I wish there were the other colors that are available in Europe. I think the evil bird flu has halted all importing of birds from over seas. I don't think eggs would do well being shipped from afar either. Too bad I am not loaded with money. I would find a way to get some Brabanters and Owlbeards over here. Ho well. I will have to work with what I got!!

Thanks so much for all the great info on them.

Hey guys --

I am going to be picking up my brabanters a week from Monday. This breeder has both cream and gold, and I haven't decided which to get, yet. (I don't know the source of this breeder's birds. She does breed them, but I wouldn't be surprised if her birds originally came from Ideal.)

If Allan thinks that the creams are crossbreeds with spitz, then should I choose the golds instead? Any input welcomed!

All I know is that the cream is not listed as a standard color in Europe.

They may be a sport that kept showing up and was re-bred back into the golds ??? Spitz cross is another idea.

It all depends on your tastes. I already had Spitzhauben and wanted the gold. It is up to you.

Well....I'm already going to have a lot of gold-brown-red birds, so I had kinda thought of getting the cream for contrast. But I am not wedded to the idea.

I have to admit I'm not sure that's the case. As I understand it, new standards are submitted to the APA for approval, and there must be a certain number of breeders who have birds meeting these standards.I don't know that this takes place at a show or not; I got the impression that it did not.

Non-standard birds can sometimes be shown at local fairs (as opposed to APA "accredited" poultry shows). That's why you sometimes see someone with an Easter Egger claiming it's a grand champion Ameraucana--and quite upset when someone with a little more knowledge tries to point out that it is not. The judges at the county fair may not even have access to the breed standards and can simply award prizes based on how pretty a bird is. (Lots of Easter Eggers are quite beautiful.) If you don't plan to go to poultry nationals, you may well be able to enter your Brabanters in a local fair, anyway. Some fairs don't even have different breed categories. (Other county fairs, I should point out, are very professional!) Even Cuckoo Marans aren't yet recognized by the APA and there are lots of them, comparatively.

They look so sweet!
