The Spitzhauben was imported into the US in the 1950's.
I am not sure when the Brabanter showed up here. I saw a photograph of a gentleman in the US holding one several years ago. When I contacted him, he said he had sold the birds but didn't remember to whom. He also didn't know of any breeders in the US. I find that suspicious, since I know Ideal did not import them.
The Brabanter nearly became extinct in the Netherlands in early 1900's but it was bred with German stock among others to help revive the breed. The Brabanter is most closely related to the Owl Beard. The only differences in the two appear to be the crest (none or very small in the Owl Beard) and the shape of the beard. The Owl Beard has one full continuous full round beard, while the Brabanter has a three-clump beard. To my knowledge, there are no Owl Beards in the US.
