Brabanter breed standard problem

Quote:
I have to admit I'm not sure that's the case. As I understand it, new standards are submitted to the APA for approval, and there must be a certain number of breeders who have birds meeting these standards.I don't know that this takes place at a show or not; I got the impression that it did not.

Non-standard birds can sometimes be shown at local fairs (as opposed to APA "accredited" poultry shows). That's why you sometimes see someone with an Easter Egger claiming it's a grand champion Ameraucana--and quite upset when someone with a little more knowledge tries to point out that it is not. The judges at the county fair may not even have access to the breed standards and can simply award prizes based on how pretty a bird is. (Lots of Easter Eggers are quite beautiful.) If you don't plan to go to poultry nationals, you may well be able to enter your Brabanters in a local fair, anyway. Some fairs don't even have different breed categories. (Other county fairs, I should point out, are very professional!) Even Cuckoo Marans aren't yet recognized by the APA and there are lots of them, comparatively.

They look so sweet!

Actually non-standard breeds &/or varieties are routinely shown at APA sanctioned shows but they can progress no further than Best Of Breedor Variety. As a judge they present a challenge as we have no standard to judge by. What I di, and I suspect others do the same, is judge them primarily on condition.
The up side of showing non-standard birds is it often helps create interest in the breed or variety.
There is a process by which new breeds/varieties are admitted to the standard but it's more involved than I'm prepared to type here. Suffice it to say it's an exaustive process.
I suspect that there are people working toward that goal with the breeds in question but would not know how to put you in touch with them. There may be breed clubs formed or forming-try a Google search.
Good Luck

What NYREDS said is correct.

Breeders have been trying to get the Marans into the APA for years, and a lot of serious people are working on the process.

Hey Ewesheep --

Is there a brabanter club in this country? If so, how can I find them? They aren't on the feathersite brabanter page......

Any idea where the gold spitzes would have come from? I thought they weren't allowing chickens to go international
